Default MPG on 08 VN900 Custom

i know ive seen this discussed a few times concerning gas mileage, but I am just wondering that since my bike is brand new if that is perhaps why the gas mileage isnt quite as great as it should be. i dont have an exact number yet, but i bought it with a full tank, and at 82 miles theres 1/4 tank left. at 5 gallons that seems like it will be an awefully low number... seems like its gonna be maybe mid 30's?

Your mileage will improve quite a bit as the motor breaks in, but some of it has to do with how you ride as well.

The gauge is about 90% useless. It's been brought up many times here.
The trip meter is more reliable.

Hope you are enjoying your new bike!
    They all do that.

ah ok, apparently i missed that part on the gas gauge lol. yeah i figured it had to do with breaking in, but wasnt sure... im assuming just run it until the gas light comes on. i honestly baby the **** out of it. i shift every 10 mph, barely pull on the throttle.... hell everyone passes me within a couple seconds of the lights changing.

Skewterdude is right... the gas guage is worthless and it has been in MANY forum posts. Some open the center case and manually move the gas guage pin to the right so that it is more accurate. I would use your trip odometer. I usually fill up at 180-200 miles.

I always say that they should have just put a mood ring where the gauge is. It would be cheaper and just as accurate.
If you can, run it till the low-fuel light comes on, and then pull into the next station. You'll see your tank will probably only take a fraction over 3 gallons to fill back up. Also, don't be affraid to run up the rpms a bit during break in. You won't hurt it.
    They all do that.

see, ive read that as well, that even almost completely EMPTY, it only takes just over 3 gallons, yet the dealer and manual said 5.

It does take 5 gallons... you just have to be comfortable riding it with the gas light on for 50-80 miles. This is the reason why many have moved the needle to the right.

Yes, the gauge is more of a novelty. I love the "mood ring" thing,,, ROTFL.
Breaking in my 900 custom the mileage varied a bit (but not too much), and I changed the oil at 600 and 1200.
After the 1200, I took it on an approximately 400 mile run (each way). The mileage was about 60 on the highway (maybe just under). I use the trip meter as a check point. The gauge is just for laughs.

What I'm still trying to figure out is, the speedometer.

When I approach around 190 to 200 miles, I will stop for gas. My low fuel light lits up around 180 miles in the trip gauge.

Seriously, don't be too easy on it. Avoid full-throttle acceleration and especially avoid lugging along in a too high of a gear, (which you may be doing if you're accelerating so slowly) but it needs some spirited running and downshifting to seat the rings well. Baby it too much and you'll end up with lots of oil blow-by later on.
Have fun and keep the shiny side up.

Had the same problem with the PC800. The solution was to run the tank down to one gallon, then remove the float and bend it to read what the rider was comfortable with. I wonder where the float access is on the VN900?

I have been getting 52 to 55 mpg. I have not seen the low fuel light yet.I have run to 200miles with the gauge showing empty and get fuel but have not yet put 4 gal in the tank. after you have been in the saddle 1 1/2 to 2 hr it is time to stop anyway

I get anywhere from 49 to 52 mpg. The fuel light comes on almost automatic at 200 miles. Tonight I filled at 213 miles on the trip meter and put 4.168 gallons in the tank. My gauge is now pretty accurate as I messed with it when I installed Webslinger's dial face

Gas mileage will vary greatly on how fast you go. While traveling to Vegas I was pushing 90 MPH in a heavy wind and was only getting about 43 MPG and was searching for gas stations at about 140-160 milesI can get up to about 50 if I stay at 65-70 MPG

I have been getting 40 MPG every since I got my 900. I have Cobra Pipes, Hypercharger Pro, and a Power Commander III.

Just recently... I don't know how in the world I got this great gas mileage, but I just went 223 miles on 4.467 gallons. That's 49.92 MPG!!!

I guess all I can say is that I'm going the speed limit and I dont rush off at redlights anymore. My style of riding has calmed a bit.

52 mpg last check . I remeber my first tank of gas being empty. Aleast to the gauge. Stopped to get gas. I think it held 2 gals. 180 to 200 Im looking for gas. But it was scary. The second time waiting for the light to come on, Im thinking if the gauge dont work right, Does the Light !!!!!!!!!
