Heading north of Fairbanks? Whole lot of nothing up there =P Denali National Park is worth a visit- its south of Fairbanks. You'll see Mt Mckinnley and lots of wildlife. (The park is bigger than RI BTW) Don't forget binaculars. Oh and a gun wouldn't be a bad thing to have, but not a 9mm. Shoot a bear in the head with a 9 and he'll eat you =P Maybe a 357 or 44

Or how about take a camera, and leave the gun at home.

Bring both. My mother was nearly trampled by a mother moose who stood 6-7 feet high because she accidently came between the mother and her calves. Not much you can do in a situation like that.

I hear ya! Been caught in some very cold temps riding across country along with hail that made me run for cover it hurt so bad...nearly froze in my tent last summer just before labor day weekend camping out in high country at Stanley Lake Idaho...had to ride 10 miles in near zero visibility from fog and frost on everything...ice on the highway until I could get to town and thaw out drinking a gallon of coffee. No break downs...but just dealing with the varied elements can make ya think the planning could have been just a little better.
