Default Talk about stupid!!!

So, I ordered the new speedo/tach combo. It was supposed to be here today. So, me being the forward thinker, last night I thought, heck let me get prepared for the speedo by getting everything taken apart. Took the headlight off, took the old speedo off, took the dash lights off. Read gadgets "how-to" on installing the tach and how to run the wire. So, I took the fuel tank off. Unfortunately, I missed the part about draining the fuel. Needless to say, the fuel went everywhere. Well, I get it under control and proceed to finish removing the tank. I sit it on a soft towel and thought, it's all good. Well, today with the heat, the fuel was forced out of the drain tubes towards the back of the tank and it ran all over the tank. I get home from work to find my tank with the paint literally peeling off. Talk about livid.

Anyway, I ripped the fenders, grill guard, and side panels off and will be dropping them off for a paint job. I think I am going to go with all black. I like the look of black and chrome, very clean.

I guess the positive here is I get to have my bike painted, but I'd prefer to do it on my time and not have to.......

Another positive, my bags came today. They are already black. My fairing comes Thursday. It will need to be painted as well though.

Anyway, all in all, it is what it is and you go on with life.

Just thought I'd share my stupidity story. Sorry about the length.

Hey you live and you learn. Atleast now you get a fresh paint job and it will look better than before.

Good luck.

I can just picture you walking in and seeing the tank with the paint peeling off. I probably would have cried, literally. Glad to hear that you are at least making something positive out of it. Which fairing did you get?

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I don't know that I'd call it stupid. Be a little kind to yourself and call it inexperienced. If you do it again, then we may have to play the "stupid" card.

Hope the new paint job comes out to your great satisfaction! Please post some pictures so we can all drool.

Probably be a cool look... like acid wash...

Glad you have such a positive attitude about it! If this hadn't happened, if you're like me you'd eventually decide one day you wanted new paint and then wait two years to get around to it or justify it! Good for you, fresh new paint makes for a nice new ride!

I ordered the Wide Open Custom Fairing. It arrives tomorrow.

Fairings

So, I think I'm going to get the bike painted a base color of black and was thinking about dark blue flames with lightning. Hmmm...not sure, but the wife could have strangled me...

Anyway, I have to decide tonight because I am taking the fairing down tomorrow and need to tell him what I want. For straight black, he was going to charge me $750ish with everything, including the fairing. If I choose to go with a more "custom" look, then it will be around $1100-1200. Is that reasonable from what you guys have seen?

Thank you for all the comments!!! The support is great. AND BELIEVE ME IF WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN!!!

Yeah, my brother-in-law was there and he said my face was priceless. After I calmed down he said he wished he had a camera. My original reaction, my jaw hit the floor and I did almost cry...I was absolutely livid! But hey, things could be worse, much worse...

AND I get to paint my bike the color I would like.... So, in the end, I get what I would end up wanting anyway. The timing could have been better financially though. Between bags, fairing, speedo, and other customer items, my card is feeling some pain.

If my vote is worth anything (and it may already be too late), I'd decided that if I ever got paint, it would be the black with dark blue "something"... like you mentioned, flames or lightening (or both), would be good choices! I love that look!

If you go with that, DEFINITELY NEED PICS!!! And we may not be able to ride together, or I have to change my choice! LOL

Here is what I decided to get done. It's going to cost me roughly $1,300. Not too bad.

Oh, and you might want to be careful of leaking gas in the future! LOL

Not my stuff. It was what I found on the internet that I liked and I took it to him to paint it. The price was right so to speak.

Yeah, I don't think I will ever take gas on the tank lightly again. It was a very costly lesson, let me tell you!!!

******

BTW - just so everyone knows, that $1,300 is covering painting the fairing, tank, fenders, side covers, radiator grill, and hard bags.

Of course no one else on the forum has ever done anything silly.. lmao

Hey, sorry about the mess, but I think you picked a cool paint scheme. Just a suggestion, I would recommend blending darker on top then down vertically acrossthe whole bike so that the lightening kind of fades in, because that much lightening effect up top on the faring might get old.

No matter what you end up with, I'd love to see the pics. Take Care.
