At work today one of our engineers told me to come out to my bike with keys in hand at break time. When I did I was met by him and a few others. He opened up a fancy case and pulled out a really expensive looking Db meter. I fired it up and he began taking readings.
During the warm up period my bike put out an impressive 108 db. When it idled down finally, it registered about 96-97 db. He then made the mistake of kneeling down near the rear of my bike and told me to goose it a little...I think he jumped about a foot off the ground. It was great. With a good snap to the throttle it reached 125 db! thought this was pretty cool because I wondered how loud they really are. Oh yeah, I have Cobra spdstr shorts... |

I'm currently in a development project with SCCA GT-1 team trying to develop a legal sound control exhaust while creating the least power loss. The SCCA spec is only <104 dB @ 50 ft, using a C-weighted scale. It's amazing how little science has been applied to this area. Cheers! John |

That's the problem... the cops tend to ignore the science too.
Fed standards are 80db, 50ft away, bike moving 55mph straight and level. The City of Anaheim has a standard noise ordinance for "exterior noise"... 82db, no distance specified. Ya... so LEGALLY, in the city of Anaheim, you can't sound a horn, yell to a friend, operate a metal grinder, etc....

Australia wide, it's a maximum of 93db and that's usually meant to be taken on a drive/ride past at 80kph. LOTS of V-Twins have cobras or some form of de-baffled pipes, some get booked...... usually, they leave them alone.

My horn is only 115 db. With Cobras you'd be just as well off to rev it up as blow the horn.
(btw, just noticed RichLockyer is from Chino...hope everything is ok after the quake...isn't that where it was centered?)

yeah, i can believe that!
mine are pretty damn loud, but it's nice to have a rough idea of just HOW loud they are! ![]() the legal limit here is 98 if i recall. ![]() I rode past a motorcycle cop who was parked at the bottom of my road yesterday. I gunned it a little as i dropped down a gear for the intersection ahead. ... I also nodded at him, but he just stared at me. Not sure if he was trying to figure out if my pipes were too loud or what the hell kinda sexy bike it was that i was riding i think it was the latter, as i didn't see him following me with his lights on.Quote:

Didn't even have anything piled in the garage fall on the bike... just a stack of bills next to the computer ended up in the floor and the cats were a little freaked out.

Dang, what stray dog peed in your conrflakes today?
I second the comment that if you weren't interested, why read and/or comment? I thank the OP for posting this info, it gives a specific pipe, on a specific bike and tells us how loud they really are. Makes us more informed when shopping.

I hope all of our friends in the San Francisco area move inland before it happens But seriously... they don't know when it will happen, but they expect a 200 mile long surface rupture beginning in Salton Sea (near the Mexican border) and continuing into Wrightwood or Lancaster (Edwards AFB). Here's a projected "shakeout scenario" showing relative shaking intensity for various areas. http://urbanearth.usgs.gov/wp-conten...simulation.wmv This file is in real-time... with a counter at the lower left. It's gonna be bad... especially for San Bernardino. There will be only one way out of the Los Angeles area... I-5, 10, 14, 15, will all be impassible... only way out wille be south on the 5 to San Diego and across I-8 near the border to Arizona. In the attachment (edited a screen capture from the shakeout), the yellow dot is where I live.
