No, I haven't drilled out the hole, Mainly cause I didn't think that would do much good. What I did do is remove the small 1/4" diameter plastic disk inside the vent-one-way-valve on the cap. It is easy to get to by just removing the phillips screw holding the latch and valve system together and then take apart the valve removing the small plastic piece that captures the valve disc. Then put it back together without the disk. Do note how it goes together before taking it apart. Might be important. (I saved the disk in a little sip-lock just in case I might need it again). Doubt it though. This allows the expanding vapor to come and go freely in and out of the tank. I know it aint too EPA friendly but I haven't had the "Magic Shut down" after a fillup and bumpy road anymore. Besides there aren't any EPA mandated things within ten feet of my Bike now, anyway. (2003 800A). The chamber holding the little disk would get gas splashed up into it if the bike was filled up and I rode it down a bumpy road. the disk would get gas on top of it while it was in it's chamber and seal off the vent. This was also the whistling sound of the tank when it sat in the sun. It don't do that any more neither. The only issue would be the slight gas smell when I approach the bike when sitting in the sun. Don't smoke anymore so "no worries".

Jim

This is my first response to anyone on this site. I have been really amazed at how great this forum is. Many kudos to the moderators and members for keeping it clean, apolitical, and VERY! informative. Thanks.

Sorry I haven't put together a photo shoot of my bike yet. I understand that it may be a requirement for a newbe to post pics ASAP. I'll get to that soon.

It could be the float in the carb is stuck and allowing fuel to drain. Check your oil for the smell of gas. If you can smell gas in the oil you'll want to rebuild the carbs.

Also, if you need a manual you can download it for free HERE.

My 2000, 800B gets better mileage with reg. gas and there is no pinging or loss of power, so why wast your money on Hi-test.

I have a 1993 Vulcan 750, I'd like to get some louder pipes without blowing $500. Does anyone know where I can get some cheap pipes?

Thanks

The Vance & Hines Cruzers are very a popular choice for the 750. I did a quick search and found them for $341.96 with free shipping.

Also you might give Beartooth Kawasaki (owners of this site) a call as they can also price them out for you and they give members a discount. 1-800-556-3098 and ask for Laurie.

For additional information here's a good READ.

I got my first look at the new 900's yesterday at the vancouver bike show. I had an opportunity to throw my leg over one. I like the bike, The bars have a good feel to them in their placement, they are wide and come back nicely. It feels much different than the 800.

when time comes for my wife to upgrade her bike, i certainly hope she takes a look at thie 900. I think its going to be a great bike.

Indeed, those are gorgeous bikes! BTW, how many miles/years on an 800 is considered to make the bike "past its prime"??? My 2005 800 Classic has 12,700 miles...

Default Vulcan 800 Electrical short?

I have a 1999 Kawasaki 800 which appears to have some sort of eletrical short, the battery runs down (new battery).

Some background. This is my first owned bike, I rode my husband's 20 + year old Honda CB 650 initially. Then he got a Vulcan Nomad so I decided to get a smaller bike that wasn't as top heavy and balky as the old Honda. I found the used Vulcan 800.

I really like the 800 bike, it looks classy and rides much nicer than the old Honda. My husband "borrows" it to ride as he says it's more fun than his motorcycle.

Symptoms: it's summer so we have the bike on the road--The Motorcycle is ridden for several days, then rests two or three days (usually due to bad weather) The battery dies. We charge it up run the bike around to make sure it's really chaged up. Ok for a day or so, next rest the same thing happens. We noticed that sometimes when the bike is turned off the rear brake light remained on. Messing with the key in the ignition will stop that but we're still getting a leak some where. So where should I look? What might be causing the problem?

Welcome aboard DD!

1. Is the battery new or old?

2. Have you checked the ignition switch for lose or near broken wires?

3. Have you cleaned the battery cables where they hook up to the battery and to the starter?

Those are a few things to look at.

If the battery is a few years old it's possbile it's giving up the ghost and you'll need to buy a new one. Just a thought.

The battery is brand new, connections clean but your suggestion for checking ignition wires is a good one. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum Donna. Another thing that you might want to check, If you have a volt meter, start the bike and hold the leads onto the battery posts (black to neg, red to pos) at idle it should read 12+ volts, rev the engine and the volt meter should increase up to about 14+ volts. If not, you may have a faulty voltage regulator, or alternator.

As far as the brake light staying on when the bike is shut off..the ignition switch has 3 positions..from on position you can turn the key both ways and remove the key, One way is off, the other way will turn the rear light on.
Hope the problem is something very simple to find & fix.

very informative, rwrighter. Will do. This forum is great and I have lot to learn; my motorcycle seems very reliable and we'll figure this battery thing out. I've not had any gas lock up problems that I've heard about for the 800s. In the meantime, hope it warms up soon so we can get out again. We're headed for 12 inches of snow Sat/Sun but since you are from Ohio you probably get worse weather than we do on the East Coast.
