It was like $6.00 or around that. I'm going to run to that shop tonight and pick it up. I figure then I have two options once i get to that point.
Thanks for your help - I wouldn't have thought of calling the harley dealership. And it should be fine linking a x-ring chain?

The differenc between the x-ring and o-ring itself isn't much of one at all when you actually take a look at the rings. They say the x holds lubricant longer than the o but thats about it. I can't see it adding that much longivity over the oring. But thats jmo. The only problem you might have is if the x is thicker than the o width wise. Then you may not be able to squeese the Master link tight enough to get it to clip, but you'll have to take a look at the x and o rings when you get it.

Well I'll see what happens tonight. Good reason to get out on the bike tonight - it's been unseasonably cold here, high of 62 today!

The link that I got from the harley dealership was just a standard link, no spacers, and definitely not big enough to fit my application so.....

Now not sure what I'm going to attempt next might just be back to delaying this entire process, I really don't want to do a crap job at such an important thing.

Found a cycle shop that says they carry what I need --- so we'll see tomorrow.

I have to tell you......As I was zipping thru the thread responses, I seen the recommendations for SeaFoam. Living 30 miles from Atlantic City, I am an avid beach go-er. I've also been riding for 2 months and really laffed my *** off THINKING you were telling him to put foam in the engine. Man...I needed a good laugh.

I use premium in my 05 Vulcan 500. I got it in Feb. with 400 miles on it. After having the carbs cleaned and tuned, I'm getting 45-50 mpg. I now have 1600 miles. When I use Sunoco Ultra, I'm getting 65. I did the math...Ultra pays.....that is, for ME it does.

Be well and safe all.

Hi, all. I'm a new rider and in the market for my first bike. I've been looking at used Vulcan 500s, and I'm looking at one now that is three years old with 400 miles on the clock. Apparently most of those miles went on in the first year, and the bike has sat in a garage since then.

The bike looks good; it is quite clean, as you would expect. It starts and runs well. The coolant is a nice bright green, and the oil looks good; barely dirty. The owner is asking somewhat less than retail book, and his comments suggested that he would come down a little more from that.

I know it's not good for a bike to just... sit. I'd appreciate any perspectives you might have on how to approach this bike. I'm thinking if I decide to pursue it and get the owner down to a reasonable price, I want to get some fresh gas in, and some Seafoam, and plan on getting the oil changed pretty soon. I haven't seen the owners manual, so I don't know the interval for oil changes, but I wouldn't be surprised if that is still the break-in oil in there.

Do I understand that the first valve adjustment on the 500 is at 600 miles, and then at 6000 mile intervals since then? (I thought that I saw that somewhere.)

Any thoughts on whether three year old antifreeze should be changed? I would if it was my car, but all the motorcycle guys I know look at me funny when I mention that. Of course, some of them ride air-cooled bikes, so it's something that they haven't had to think about in a motorcycle context.

Two additional thoughts since my initial post:

1. I took a look at the chain; it does not look oily or greasy at all. Would it be a good idea to lube the chain before I take it home? If so, with what, and how?

2. It also occurred to me that I should check the tire pressure, but I have no idea what it should be. I asked the seller about the owners manual, and they are going to look for it, but at this point, I don't have an owners manual to look at for such questions.

Hi. I am brand new here... be gentle.

Above... 1: yes, I would lube the chain with a chain oil. (Maybe later clean the chain well and start using a waxy type chain lube.)

2: Tire max. psi should be on the side of the tire. Check tires for dry rot. (Cracks in the side-walls.)

Consider borrowing or renting a trailer to get it home and until you are sure the bike is road ready?

Anyway... my reason for posting is this: My '03 Vulcan Classic has developed some slight pitting in the engine chrome. (Sat outdoors for a year. Bad me.) Any suggestions for keeping this from getting any worse?

Hey Vortex! Welcome. Sounds like you found a nice bike. I recommend first changing the oil and filter, and the gas if it has sat for a while. If it runs well, then that is more than half the battle! The tire pressure should be marked on the tires themselves. I run my 800 tires at 40psi, so I would expect 38-40psi would work on the 500 as well. The chain should not be dry, but does not require excessive oil. Just make sure the o-rings are lubricated with your favorite motorcycle chain lube, and you should be good to go.

Best of luck - let us know how it works out!

Hello 4thD, welcome to the forum, about the only thing you can do for your chome is to keep wax on it to keep it from worsening. P.S. we'll need pic's.

Thanks for responding CC. I had friend tell me the same thing but I am not clear on what kind of wax. Do you mean a carnuba or some kind of wax made for chrome? I used some brasso to polish and that made the pitting almost undetectable.

I will get some pictures up soon.

Welcome back! You'll have plenty of pages to read over with the shenanigans I've been up to.

My Update:
Sprockets and chain are on and good!
I pulled the diaphragm and looked at it but couldn't see any pinholes.

Weather looks great.
