Is the Harley hard-engine guard covers a manufacturer thing? I have never seen any aftermarket accessory for non harleys like that. I sure like the look of them though.

Lot's of bikes on the road today. I went to the gym after work today but about 15 minutes in my mind was so far elsewhere that I had to leave and saddle up. I put about 200 on this weekend, weather was 40-50ish.

I noticed my cross pipe leaking at both welds the other day . I was wondering if this would cause popping on decel , and do I need this pipe? I have a 1998 vulcan 500 .

Every item on the bike is stock OEM for the CVO limited Edition Screamin' Eagle except the following items that were added by PO.

1. Harley Hammic seat (heated)

2. V&H 3" oval slip-ons (SE pipes are in the box)

3. shorty antennas

3. chrome on speakers and around radio

4. extended shifters (heel and toe)

5. chrome buttons on controls

Yes, an exhaust leak would cause popping on decel.
From what I'm looking at the pipes would need to be replaced. Maybe try to braze or weld the leaks first, but eventually you will need a new exhaust system.

Backfires are also an indicator of a too-rich fuel mixture. Inadvertently, twice this week I've forgotten to push in the choke on my VN 500 and after riding several minutes (sufficient to warm the engine), it popped upon deceleration. This is the only time I've heard such beligerant sounds come from this bike. So now I have a choke reminder to consider as well. Pay attention to the sounds. tom

Do I have to have the cross pipe or can I cut it out and cap the holes.
There are not any after market complete systems for these little bikes.

You could probably just remove the crossover pipe without issue.
Scootworks used to sell a system for the 500 LTD, but not sure if they still do.

When I bought my bike, it had that engine guard on it. I took it off because it had lots of surface rust on it. And also because I thought it looked better without the guard. It isn't very wide. Ever since I rode to the mountains, I have been working to paint it so I could put highway pegs on it.
It also had Highway Hawk floorboards. They are comfy enough that I am not willing to spend more money to replace them. However, they are a bit rusty also. You can see the Hawks in the pic.

Thanks...they look just fine to me...on ebay they have some from china for about $80.00. Other than that, Cobra for about $235 or BTK for around the same. Would the guards protect in a drop?

probaby 10 more then stock at the most. best and only way to find out what you have is by taking it to a dyno. Otherwise youll just have to go by what other people have averaged and thats about 10 more then stock so maybe 59-60

About 58 HP and 50 ft/lbs. torque if it's jetted correctly.

I am not sure because they are not very wide. I do know the bike has been dropped before with no damage to the tank. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
