Default Help with pipes!

Just found this fourm.. Wish I had before I began my mods...
I have a 2003 V800B Classic.... (Love it)

I have had a local bike shop install V&H Strightshots (18383). and jettted the carb... (Not a Kawi dealer) The pipes were thier suggestion. They did not even mention the Cruzers. I found them later in the i-net.

My problem.. The pipes are VERRY loud and the baffels are in... I have been researching the V&H Cruzers (31365) and from what I can tell I perhaps would be happer with them.... They seem to be designed for the metric curzer opposed to beind retrofitted.

Can anyone give me a compairson..... I like the deep rumble sound and some loudness is ok..

Thanks

Ed

Has anyone put the carb setup from an ex500 on their en500? Looking for a little more speed and power and this seems like a good swap. Thoughts?
Any other mods for the 500 that anyone can share?

Very well worth it. The Vulcan 500 has been around forever. It runs great, good torque and easy to manuever. I bought mine new in 06 and have about 3000 miles on it now and I love it.
You may eventually want something with a little more power but at 55 miles to the gallon, it gives you alot of bang for the buck!!

Tattoo,

What model is it?

Most likely it is a stuck float needle in one of the carbs. They can get that way if you run it totally out of gas (dead bike) then switch to reserve. Or if it has sat for a long time (Winter) and the fuel in the carb has evaporated and left varnish behind causing a stuck float needle. First time you try to start it fuel will run into the float bowl but not be shut off by the needle and float. I would doubt that it is a leaking float that has sunk to the bottom of the bowl, but it could be.

It also could be that the fuel selector valve is on prime. That position will bypass the vacuum diaphram shut off valve on the tank and allow gas to go into the carb even when the engine isnt running. This can cause it to flood out too.

If you aren't mechanical like, I'd take it to someone you trust (Dealer) to check and clean the carbs and reset the float level. The float level in a motorcycle CV carb is pretty critical and effects the mixture at all throttle settings.

Hope these suggestions help.

Jim

Replacement Fuel Tank:

I've been searcing ebay for a 97 fuel tank vn800a without luck. Just saw one with a part number similar to the one I need. two ?'s

1) will a part number 51001-1601 be compatible with 51001-1479? (these are both non-ca standard tanks)
2) any places (outside of ebay) to look for used fuel tanks?

Hey all... the most simple best mod one can do is to change out the head lamp for a 80/100 vs the 55/60

illegal maybe but is a cop going to pull you over and ask you to remove your head light bulb?

Motorcycles should be allowed to have more light

I'm wondering how the 2001 VN750 I bought today is supposed to run? Mine feels weak, rough and different below 2500 RPM than it does above it. It also periodically idles slower, stalls, and is very weak off idle. It always feels much better and smoother and even sounds different above 2500, almost like it is changing from a single cylinder to a twin. Is weak performance down low normal or do I have a gummy carb, a synch problem, fouled plugs or something else going on? The previous owner said the only problem he ever had was plugs that were fouled from using too much choke, but now I wonder if something else is wrong that is messing up the plugs.

By the way, the bike only has 3500 miles on it and I love the way it rides and handles except for this "behavior". Thanks in advance for any info or help.

Ok, just got an 02 vn800b. No owners manual, no nothing, but the bike. Having been outta bikes for over 30 years, anything I should be aware of? Read some about using seafoam, how much, how often? Was told it needs premium gas but read here that 87 is good.... So confused, HELP!!! If it matters it has 7500 miles on it.

Follow the directions on the Seafoam can. Only use the premium if you have to and that would be for pinging or knocking. What elevation are you at will determine whether you really need higher octane than the cheap gas. FYI, I used 86 or 87 in mine except for when I had my wife and luggage on too.

I have a Vulcan 500 and really only ride on the weekends. I have found that I need to keep a little Stabil in the tank or I get a bad idle and hesitation on acceleration. I assume thats the ethanol problem. Good luck-Tom

Default How to make Vulcan 500 sound better?

Hi Guys..I am new to this forum. Infact I am new to the whole motorcycle riding. I love riding motorcycles. So bought a 2007 Vulcan 500LTD recently. I got 600 miles on it. I love everything about it except its sound. Can I do something like buying after market exhaust pipes etc.. to make it sound better? In that case can any one tell me what kind of pipes would be suitable? when I asked my dealer they said there are no pipes available for this bike. Is that true? Thanks for your help...

You really shouldn't need any Sta-Bil in the tank if you don't ride for a week. I've gone 2-3 weeks between rides before and never had any problems. The only time I get bad idle and hesitation is when the engine isn't fully warmed up. You may want to run some carb cleaner through once or twice or maybe some SeaFoam. You could also try a different brand of gasoline and see if that helps.

FYI, someone just posted this thread:

probably in answer to your question.

I noticed that the thread topic includes the 900, but the first post doesn't mention it... perhaps that's the reason there's maybe a little less on the 900?
Anyhow......
I have the sneaking suspicion (read "KNOW") that the speedo on mine is off too (but my dealer swears there's no Kawi service bulletin about it). They're looking into it Monday. Is this truly as universal as it sounds around here and other forums? It seems as though Kawi really put out an entire run of bikes with faulty speedo's? At first the guy at the shop said that it wouldn't be warranty, but considering that it would be illegal to deliberately sell a motor vehicle of any kind with a faulty speedo...... that's a warranty issue, eh?
I also have a "ticking" that's appeared at certain rev's..... maybe a small exhaust leak? Dunno- mine had been assembled for about 2 hours when I picked it up.... the mechanic's ride happened, he got off and the test rides happened (had a more experienced buddy try it too.. heck, I'd love anything after so long) I did stuff mid-grade in it last night, and it was hot today, perhaps it's a bit of knock/ping action.
And the freakin' cooling fan startles me around town. WHOOSH! But hey, it works well!
I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has found a set of mudflaps that work well, too.
God, I love being around (figuratively) people that wanna talk Kawi as much as I do........

First ,the reason you didn't see the 900 mentioned in the start of this thread is because the sticky was started before the 900 was ever in production(thats all)The speedo issue you've brought up goes back 10 yrs or more. (It reads within 10% of being accurate) close enough for govenment standards , so you won't be getting MawKaw to do anything to fix it. All the metric companies have the same speedo issue's and with them dating back as far as they do , it would be to costly of a fix to deal with. The ticking your hearing is the valves , your 9 is running machanical lifters (just like the 800 it replaced) as long as you hear mild ticking everything is ok, it's when you don't hear any ticking that you need to get the valve clearance's checked and readjusted.
