Very much so... I wouldn't want to see anyone waste money, and don't like recommending things unless I think it's worth it (keeping in mind we're troubleshooting over the 'net!) but I think this is a safe bet!

Thanks, Jeff...I paid 57 dollars on line for the battery. That sounds about right and I probobly couldnt get it much cheaper in store. So right now the bike sits in the cold, but I am really praying that this does the job. If it doesnt we can move to plan C. Thank You so much for all your help.

Not a problem at all George, I very much hope this is it too, and can't wait to hear the end result!

Things are always more expensive up here, never really did figure out why, but I paid $75 last year for mine, so you should feel OK with that!

I'm sure it will ship with the acid separately... just remember that the better you treat it, the better it will treat you. Measure the acid out equally among the cells, and though I believe it will say that it will not require an initial charge, I gave mine a full charge anyway...

I Have A Few Questions George. You Charged Battery, yes . Engine Cranks Over But Does Not Fire Up, Yes? How Long Will The Engine Crank Before It Starts To Slow, If It Cranks? Personally I Think Vulcan Batteries Are Undersized, My Bike Will Only Crank About 2 Or 3 Minutes Before It Slows And Its Fairly New. Have You Tried A Shot Of Starter Fluid While Cranking? If You Look In In Carb And Twist The Throddle Can You See A Small Shot Of Gas Shoot Into The Carb Bore, You Should. You Say The Bikes Outside And It's Cold, below Freezing? May Be Water Froze In Carb Bowl? Have You Checked For Spark At The Plug, Is There Any? Just Some Thoughts.

Yup, sounds like your battery is toast to me. Take care of your new one. Keep it charged and charge it at 2 amps or less. Since you ordered the battery online, I am pretty certain it will ship without acid. You will have to buy it at NAPA or whatever. Pretty inexpensive. MC battery doesen't hold much, less than a quart.
The cold weather is not helping with the battery or the bike starting.

Thanks for the thoughts. I am hoping it isnt frozen. I have not checked the carb or for spark at this point. How would I do that? Is it easy to see if gas is getting into the carb?
I did charge the battery for ten hours and it starts to slow after about ten to twelve cranks. I am going to check to see how old that battery is. I have to email the guy I bought the bike from. I will let you know, but I have a feeling that I needed the battery.

Oh, gel-cell battery it looks like? Cool. Get the new battery in it and it should fire right up. You are probably not getting enough power to the ignition and coils.

That's pretty much what I'm trying to say, rusty just says it better!

OK, Here is the latest. I just installed the battery and I can see the difference in that it is stronger and not dimming the lights. It was about to start for a sec and then shut right off. After I let it sit for a while, that is what happens. It turns over and then shuts right off. I think some where , there is not enough fuel getting into the system. What should I check next. Please Help...I need to get this bike on the road.
Thanks again
George

ONe more thing, When I checked the oil (or lack there of), it was dry so that will deffinitely be my next step but I dont think that would completely stop it from turning over...would it?

GEORGE!!! Don't try to start it with no oil! PLEASE!!! That HAS to be your very next step! If it DOES start, damage can start right away!

Is it dry? Why is it dry? Did you drain it and not refill it? Or does it just look dry to the naked eye? If you can't tell how much oil is in it at all, I'd suggest draining it and refilling it... depending how long it's been since a filter change you might want to take care of that at the same time.

There is probably a sticker somewhere next to the oil filler cap that says how much oil to put in with or without a filer change, and 10W40 should be good, unless you are somewhere very hot, consistently.

Once you've got that done, we can go back to your "not starting" problem, but you really shouldn't try until you're certain it's properly filled with oil!

Well, Jeff, I put a stick in there and it came out dry which is why I see there seems to be no oil. I am not sure why it is dry. There is no oil leaking. Would it be ok if I fill it without changing the filter or should I do the whole thing? Now, once I do this and it still does not start what should the next step be?

No, you can't do the "stick test", you have to check it at the sight glass... there should be a small window at the side of the bike, about the size of a nickel that when the bike is held LEVEL (be careful with this part) the oil should show to the halfway point in that circle. I'm not that familiar with exactly where this is on the 500, but it should be hear the kickstand somewhere, you will have to be down on your knees to find it.

Then, the simple stuff... you have gas in it? (I'll start real simple, just in case!) Does your fuel petcock have an "OFF" position? Make sure it's "ON". Choke out? If you follow those steps, and still nothing, let me know...

You've had it running since the head replacement right? Has anything changed between then and now? Remind me about the "sitting"... Sat outside for a while, right? How long? Next, in my opinion, is plugs and wires... if it's cranking but not catching, pulling the plugs and checking to see if they are wet tells you if you are getting spark...

But I'd like to know if it catches at all... how old is the fuel in it?

have you tried a shot of starting fluid into the carb?

I just put the gas in about four days ago so that should be fine. I could not find where the frigin plug is located on this bike for some reason. It has been sitting outside for about two months and yes, it was running fine after the head was replaced and nothing has changed since then. As a matter of fact, I brought it back in for adjustments right after the head was replaced for a seal and that was it. It sat because it was getting too cold to ride.
