Risers sound like a nice addition, at 6'2" I sometimes feel a little cramped...still wanna get pegs for my crash bar so I can stretch out my legs on rides.
Jeff, that's why I wish I knew other people in the area that had 800's, so I could give some of these things a try before committing to them. Still working on paying off a skidsteer, so major purchases are out of the question right now anyway, so maybe it's a good thing I don't know what I'm missing. |

The forum comes in handy for that, if you can't ride it and try it, at least you can get an honest opinion about how it looks, how it feels, how it lasts, what it's really like... and I mean that for the seat, the highway pegs (got 'em), how things work for guys of different heights (I'm 6'1"), how the risers make a difference (got 'em, but never rode this bike with the stock risers)...
I can send pics of the risers if you like, but I can tell you that one of the FIRST THINGS that sold me on this bike was the comfort of the bar placement! And I will say it again, until I'm blue in the face (because I did it, I've been there, and I know now)... don't spend a TON on trying to find any other way around the seat comfort before you seriously consider the Mustang seat! I did floorboards, highway pegs, considered forward controls, trying to find the elusive butt comfort... and found a local deal on the Mustang... LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT!!!

Do the risers require longer control cables?
Just looked at the mustang seats. Didn't think the price was too bad until I saw the ones with the backrests. Ouch! Last edited by ohsoloco : 01-28-2009 at 11:40 AM. |

Not with something as subtle as 4x1... Here's a couple of shots to give you an idea... and YES, the bike was filthy that day! Sign of being well ridden, I like to say! Compare this to what you have... if you have stock, you should just have about a 2" straight stub...

I found a guy in Ottawa (that was a gift, much smaller market here!) selling a used seat off his wife's old bike, a match to mine: Because of sore @ss syndrome, I wanted the Wide Touring but at the right price would have considered just that... I got lucky enough that this was the two-piece (Bonus! Removable passenger seat was something that I REALLY wanted), driver backrest (REALLY wanted that too)... in MINT condition, not a blemish. $250. Local, so no shipping, no tax. Sorry! ![]() And the backrest is SO awesome, it's virtually a requirement... you can wedge yourself in against it using the highway pegs... ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Best pic I have handy... changes the look without the passenger seat, and I like that! ![]()

When I get home tonight, I will post some links to "cheap" risers. There is a thread on this forum that tells you what to buy from Sears to make a set of risers for your bike and will cost less than $30.00. I did it on my bike.
Mustang seats can be exspensive, but I found a deal on eBay (not as good as Jeff's deal ) but then after winning a super deal shows up Check it out Super Deal on Mustang Seat You might look into forward controls for the 800, guy on eBay sells a set for $119.00 name rockcotton. I also bought these as I am 6' 3". Bad thing is no one makes a crash bar that will fit after installing the forward controls. I plan on welding up my own. (may have to paten it aftwards )Jeff was right on about the risers. Depending if the cables were ever changed in the past you might have to relocate the cable runs on the fork tree to keep them from binding after installing risers. Not a big issues and there are lots of threads on it. PS... Please OH PLEASE keep us posted on the custom hard bags and we will need lot of pictures. |

Sorry ohsoloco, but I have been looking at the mustangs for a long time too. I Just couldn't convince myself to pay the $460, but I nabbed that ebay deal as soon as I saw it. Thanks for the great find Joram!

Good find on the seat Joram.
Been away for a few days... chopped the end of my finger off. Kinda stinged a little ohsoloco, you shouldn't need longer cables with risers up to and sometimes beyond 4", but you MAY have to re-route the clutch cable behind the triple tree clamp (like Jeff's in the picture). +1 for the Kawasaki backrest; probably cost a bit more, but well worth it IMHO. Kawi had a textured as well as smooth cover for the seat/backrest.

I think I asked the question the wrong way. I am wanting to convert my 800 from the stock seat to a solo spring type seat, and when I remove the stock seat I need something to cover the wiring and to mount the solo seat to. Does anyone know of a source who will sell me the pan to cover this area? Thanks!

There are a bunch of guys who did what you are talking about, but I don't think any of them covered that area. Check the 800 bobber thread, or guys like alley rat, killyourchopper, skizo, IMB4U... they've all done it...

I'm gonna do it (bobber) whenever I get myself a second bike. My wife still rides on the back of my 800 sometimes, so can't go chopping it up just yet.

In the mean time, big fat chrome bagger it is... that's part of the reason I went with the Mustang solo, at least I get a BIT of a stripped down feeling once in a while!

I would look into a better mounting option than that. I personal would recommend Easybrackets (Beartooth sells them and you get 15% off) or Ghostbrackets. Both allow you to lock the bags to the bike and easily remove them with a key incase you get a flat or something.
Don't want to get stuck in the rain trying to change a tire tube and have not have the correct wrench to remove the bags. |

Sorry, Havent been on in a bit. My computer was down. Things have been well with me..hope all is well with all of you.
So far, So Good with the Vulcan. It is still bitterly cold outside by me and I ran the bike earlier today. It was a bit shaky with no choke but I figured that has to do with the cold and I cant ride it because of the ice and snow around here. I have not yet found the Sea Foam. Do you still suggest putting that in ? I did find a website that had it. Take Care and have a good night. |

Yea, I would run some SeaFoam through it. Good to keep in there when it's cold and not ridden much because it disperses water in the tank.
Good news is it's supposed to be much warmer this weekend for most all of us. Roads are extremely sloppy with sand and salt here, so I'll have to wash it

Hey George! Rusty's got it... it will help clean out any crap that was in there and giving you problems last time, as well as condition the fuel that might be sitting in there longer than you expected...
Geez... our thread has been quiet!!! No riding, or no problems?!
