Hey RustyGunner, thanks for the reply, I tend to agree with you but I have about 3k on the new tire now and the noise is still their. The rally is this weekend I may take it into the shop next weekend to have it checked. My biggest concern is that it may be ring gear and pinion whine, mabye if the backlash was not set properly when the new tire was installed, Im not sure but I know it is an issue with rear diff's on cars.

Check the plugs yet? Any mods done to the bike (FI computer, intake, exhaust, etc.)?

Well I took my 1600 Nomad to the Dealer to check the whine noise I am hearing at 50-60 mph when leaning the bike slightly to the left or right, they said the ring and pinion has an inherent amount of backlash, some are tighter than others and most have this noise at about 30 mph, since mine has the noise at a higher speed that is an indication that the ring and pinion gears have slightly more slack but it is a NORMAL condition, I wish you folks could hear this noise, It just started at around 13k after replacing the rear tire. This must be why Kawi went to belt drive on the new 1700. I will need to get a second opinion before the warranty runs out in May 2010. Since I havent had any responses of similar complaints I suppose I am the only one on this forum with this concern. I wonder what this will cost to have repaired once the warranty runs out, I'd be willing to bet that at that point it would cease to be NORMAL. I am a bit frustrated that my selling dealer told me that, this type of condition does not get better but usually gets worse. Thanks for letting me rant. Mabye my next bike will be a Gold Wing

I have to wonder if they hosed something when they changed the tire? Since that's when the noise started, and the noise is not the tire itself.

I agree totally ! I'm no mechanical guru, but after reading these posts, I was wondering the same thing.....especially since the noise appears to be from the rear, at highway speeds, and when he leans the bike to left and right sides. Is it actually coincidental that the noise started right after the new tire was installed ???
I'd go back to the dealer, and have them jack the rear of the bike up, start the engine, and bring the bike up to 50 or 60 mph, to see if the noise is still there with no friction. If the noise persisted, I would have them remove the tire from the rim, and have them mount the rim to the bike and test it again. By following the process of elimination, they're bound to find out what is causing the noise.

Mike,
We have the same bike. They're definitely FI. That "choke" is supposedly for cold starting but in 37,000 miles and many cold starts I've never used it.

The 'Choke' on the FI bikes not a choke at all, it's a fast idle. If you ever remove the idle air injection solenoids, you'll definately need that.
