Default I Cheated On My 900 Custom With A Red Head

Shame on me. I cheated on my bike. I went to San Francisco this week and rented another bike to head up the California coast. But not just any bike. I got a hold of a Ducati 1098.

Holy cow, that bike was the most insane thing I've had between my legs. This thing was glued to the road. There is nothing more crazy than cranking back on the throttle and looking down to see that you're going 165 mph.

On the other hand, it was the most uncomfortable thing I've ridden. If I was going below 40 mph, my butt, wrists and back were screaming. But the minute that bike broke 100 mph, it suddenly became a lot more comfortable.

Riding through downtown San Francisco made me really want my 900. But once I was hitting the curves on Highway 1 and flying though traffic doing over 140 mph on Highway 101 I totally forgot about my bike.

Before I rented the bike I was thinking of getting one. Now I know I'm not getting one. I would be dead in 6 months. That bike demands to be ridden like an idiot.

By the way, I rented through sportbikerental.com. Those guys were world-class. Dropped the bike off at my hotel. Supplied all the gear and picked the bike up as well. They were incredibly nice.

When we were going that fast on the 101, it was about 2:00pm on a Thursday. Cars were few and far between at that time. There were moments when we had a 1/2 mile gap between cars.

We weren't the craziest SOBs out there. Those Californian riders will split the lanes and ride in between cars in bumper to bumper 65 mph traffic. I would rather do over 140 through light traffic than do 65 between cars. That's just stupid.

We talked to the guy that rented us the bikes and he said that cars are usually aware of bikers "splitting lanes" and watch out for it. But I kept thinking about all the tourist in the area that don't know to look for it. All it takes is one car to change lanes and you're dog meat. In that kind of traffic, it probably takes a while for cars to stop running over you.

Here's a YouTube video of a guy "splitting lanes" in San Francisco:

That's crazy! I had my old M3 up to 167 on the autobahn when I lived in England, but those guys know how to drive. They move out of the left lane when you come up on them 100% of the time. I can't imaging going that fast on a bike not knowing what SUV driving soccer mom is talking on her cell phone is going to do when you pull up on her and scare the sh** out of her. I'll also say that there are some guys out there I'd be equally scared of doing the same thing and watching a DVD. Glad you had fun and came back in one piece; maybe you hung a bell from the Ducati?

As long as it was with a red head, it's okay.

Craziness...I'm not sure I'd even know what to do on a sportbike, especially since they want to go so fast.

MXto900: I just realized our avatars are eerily similar.

No, but you can drive there from England! Just drive onto the chunnel and go through France and there it is!
