Default 05 gas milage for the search impaired

yes I seem to be search impaired...lol I know I read a great post here on verious milage and when your fuel light goes off.... but now I cant seem to find it...

I am getting right at 30 mpg.... and my fuel light is going off right around 85 to 90 miles into a tank. Do these numbers jive with any other 05 MS owners? I know ride styles vary, and I am still in the break in... just wondering where others are at....

thanks
Paul

I'm getting near the end of my break-in period. I've been getting anywhere from 30-36 mpg (just filled up today and got a little over 32). As for my fuel light, I'm right where you're at. I've heard mileage goes up along with a "smarter" fuel light after a couple thousand miles are on the odo. Here's hoping.

You guys need a tune up!! My 2001 1500 Classic FI with V&H straight shots, PCIII, and stock intake got 47 mpg today on a 250 mile trip. Two weeks ago, I went to Washington DC, 1230 miles, two-up with luggage and clocked 48 mpg. Ran highways and interstate 65-70 all the way.

It's not easy to go that slow with a Mean Streak. I usually do 80-90 on highways and interstate and get around 38 MPG.

The low fuel light seems get better as you accumualte mileage. However, I noticed that everytime I change my TFI setting, the low fuel light goes back to what it used to do (i.e., comes on too early) and gets better as I ride more. Perhaps the low fuel light is somehow integrated into the FI.

Don't got a meanie but do got a 05 1600 classic. According to my owner's manual, the fuel light comes on when about 1.2 gal of fuel is left which is just slightly less than 1/4 tank.

Don't know but wouldn't think the meanie would be much different?

Cheers

My light comes on about 90-100 miles. I've always (pre-post mods) gotten 38-42 mpg. Depend on if someone is chasing me.......

Minus 1/2 gallon for the space the fuel pump takes up.

I have an '04 Mean Streak and I get about 40mpg. I have a PCIII and a set of Bub straight pipes. My light seems to come on at about 100-115 miles. But I still have probably about .5 to .7 of a gallon left, if the manual is right that I have a 3.7 gallon tank.

I thought it had 4.5 gallon tank.

I used to have a fuel switch on my Yamaha -- It had three positions: On, Off, and Reserve. In the "On" position, it would use up 3/4 of the tank, so if the engine cut off then, I'd switch to Reserve and I'd know I should fill up soon. I guess the fuel light on the Meanie serves the same purpose, but I liked the switch -- it made it difficult to ignore low fuel warning after the engine cut off

Fuel injected engines should not be run until they're dry. I think that's the reason for the "low fuel" light instead of a reserve switch.

Red '05 Meanie - I have an '03 Mean Streak and found that mileage does increase as the bike gets broken in. Also, the fuel light takes longer to light. When I first got the bike the fuel light went on at about 90 miles, now it goes on at about 125 to 135 miles or so. IMO I think 30 miles per gallon sounds low, unless you're really riding it hard, and it doesn't sound like you are if you are in the break in period. I typically get about 42 to 45 mpg, but have gotten as low as 38 mpg. I guess you could see if it gets better on its own or ask your dealer about it when you bring it in for service.

I've got and 800 classic and got ~ 42-43 mpg for the first 1000 miles. Recently at 1900 miles I changed to a synthetic oil. I'm curious as to how other 800 owners do with respect to gas mileage and how oil type and sprocket changes have affected your results. It is puzzling to me how a Toyota Prius can get 47-50 mpg on the highway (only using the gas motor) while a 56 hp / 520 lb bike won't do as well. Curious to read your analyses and experiences. I've learned much since joining and thanks for your input.
