Its baffling how terribly people adjust their mirrors. In some cases, I can be a car length or two behind their back bumper in the lane next to them, and already in their blind spot!!! <-- note: supposed to be "eek" but not showing up that way on my computer...what the heck???One of many reasons I like my truck...BIG FREAKIN MIRRORS (that I adjust correctly and actually use)!!! ![]() |

Thanks for testing those cool looking engine guards, Steve. I'm working on getting the same ones. I rode on ice once and I'll never do it again, even though I didn't fall, my tires slipped and my heart stayed in my throat for days. Glad you're ok and the scratch on the pipes is just more "bike character".

Been gone awhile here too, and wa stressed when I read the headline of your post, Steve. Glad you and your bike made out okay. Got me thinking hard about crash guards now....

scratches be gone!!!!
well in the first one it's slightly harder to see, but the area reflecting my face is the part which was polished. you can just about make out a few vertical and horizontal grooves right in the centre of the picture which i didn't manage to fully polish out. and in the second pic... you can best see the part of the end-cap which is the polished part. The bit which reflects the most light. You can see fine scuff marks. It's a slightly different finish to the rest of the cap, but you really can't tell unless you're a few inches away. ![]() ![]() i'm starting to wonder what else i can polish now!! ![]() Last edited by insolentminx : 12-11-2008 at 07:53 AM. |

Cool... what part is this? I didn't think you had scratches anywhere other than your pipes?

Only the bottom pipe is scratched. That's the billet endcap for the exhaust. They plug into the end of the heatshields and make it look like the pipes are a complete pipe, whereas they're actually the exhaust pipe and a 222 degree surrounding chrome heat shield
It's a complete metal polish kit by a company called Motad. They make exhausts for sportsbikes, and obviously this is meant for getting deeper scratches out, or for polishing dull frames. ![]() Motad |

You gotta be really careful with aluminum. Most of it is likely hard anodized, which basically means it has a built in protective coating. It's not as thick as 3 layers of chrome. If you polish it, you'll remove the hard coating, which means it will scratch easier, and it will allow the metal to corrode and weaken more readily. I'd talk to the manufacturer of the kit before trying it.
