Default Scootworks VN900 Overdrive Pulley Sets

- Scootworks is now producing overdrive pulleys for the VN900, to help reduce engine RPMs at highway speeds. These are a direct replacement for the OEM pulleys, and do not require belt replacement. The rear pulley is availabel in Chrome or Unfinished. The unfinished unit is as a result of so many people wanting one to paint various colors. The rear pulley was also designed with a deeper flange, to resemble the original rear pulley's outside diameter and retain a good fit within belt guard.

- The front pulley is +2 teeth, rendering a 34 tooth pulley. Changing only the front pulley will change the final drive ratio from 2.0625:1 to 1.941:1. This yields a 5.9% reduction in final drive ratio.

- The rear pulley is -4 teeth, rendering a 62 tooth pulley. Changing only the rear pulley will change the final drive ratio from 2.0625:1 to 1.9375:1. This yields a 6.1% reduction in final drive ratio.

- Changing the front & rear pulley will change the final drive ratio from 2.0625:1 to 1.8235:1. This yields a 11.6% reduction in final drive ratio.

Has anyone in this fourm had this modification done to their bike, I was on the interstate yesterday riding at around 70 mph, the bike felt like it was about to explode, does this mod decrease the rpm at higher speeds?

If you do a search you will find there are a lot of threads on the pulleys, both front and rear..

Tons of info here if you search. Most people change the front pulley and love it. I'm one of them.

Most who have changed the front are happy with it. I haven't read any reports by anyone who changed both front and rear. It would be interesting to find out if it is too great a reduction that negatively affects acceleration.

Your bike will 'sound' better with a little exhaust work. It will not explode at 70mph. I regularly ride at 80+ and have no problems. This bike likes to rev!

I regularly run 80 (indicated, 75 actual) on my 900LT. The 900 is an engine that like to wind up (believe the cutoff is around 7500!!).

Everybody has to start somewhere. Even if it's been asked before, someone will most always answer you. If you have the time, click on the "search" option at the top of the page and run a search on Vulcan 900. There's enough reading there to keep you going for a LONG time . You'll learn a LOT about the 900, believe me.

I've read so many post here about the Scootworks Overdrive Pulley I went cross eyed. I wasn't in a hurry to order because my Vulcan 900 Classic LT is not going anywhere in this winter weather. That's right, I'm a fair weather rider .

The only thing that concerned me about the Scootworks front pulley was some had problems with belt chirping. I was afraid the people who didn't hear this was because the had loud pipes. After reading tons of reviews on the pulley, I ordered it this morning.

The one thing I did learn from reading all those post is I'm having my tech install it. I've read to many stories of stripped heads on bolts trying to break the original pulley off. Well worth the $50 he's going to charge me.

That's a very reasonable price to swap out the front pulley. I did mine myself with not much trouble. If I had it to do over I would have it done by a good bike mechanic. It chirped when I road tested it and it could be heard over my exhaust. I back off the rear wheel about 1.5 turns on both sides and bingo. That fixed the chirping. The trick is not to over tighten the belt.
