2-strokes are so easy to rebuild and parts are so cheap that there's no reaon to not do it once a year on an engine with hard, typical use. You can generally replace the reed, piston, rings, and rod for less than $100 if you do it yourself. If there's damage to the interior surface of the combustion chanber it might get a little more complicated.
