Default No bottom end KX 250

My 2000 KX 250 has no power on the bottom end. I know a two stroke will not have the bottom end power that a four stroke will have but my son's 2001 YZ 250 has much more pull from the very bottom than my KX. He can start in 2nd gear, I am LUCKY to start in 1st gear. Last March (2009) I put a new piston/rings with new Boysen reeds in. The cylinder had a heavy wear ring in it but was not worn through the cylinder coating. (ie cylinder was/is about worn out) Is my no bottom end because I need to redo my cylinder or is it the Boysen reeds wear out real quick? Any advise will be appreciated! (And don't tell me to buy a four stroke )

Try compresssion test to make sure you have no leaks.
Boysen reeds dont wear out too quickly.
If cylinder is/was worn then it will need to be recoated/sleeved.

compression, advanced timing, jetting, and properly adjusted power valves will add to low end. Pipe, size of carb, and porting can add too.

Thanks for the input. My manual says it should be BTDC (beyond top dead center) when I pulled the side cover off it was sent in front of TDC, which really supprised me! Still need to check compression.
