My son has outgrown his KX 65. I was planning on getting him a KX 85 but I am wondering if the KX 100 would be a better choice. It has bigger wheels which will help with desert riding and I assume it will have more low end (but probably more "hit" too) than the 85. I can put a lowering kit on the the 100 that will make it slightly lower than the stock 85. I figure it will last him longer too. Any opinions or experience with either of these bikes would be appreciated. How much difference is there between the motors ?

The motors are identical except for the bore size. The 100 has a little more torque and actually less hit, its smoother because of the added torque. The 100 would last him longer because of the size but, he may not want to ride it until he can touch the ground and be comfortable on it. The lowering kit may solve this problem and be the best way to go. The only thing negative I can see with the 100 is tire selection. There just isn't very many choices in those tire sizes however, more tire companies are releasing new choices every year, so it is bound to get better! I'd say go for the KX100!

Does he race? If so, the kx100 would not be allowed in the 85cc class where the 85 could race the 85 and supermini classes.

The 100 has more of a manageable powerband than the 85, due to of course the larger bore and different timing map in the "black box". My boys race mx and we have several of both (85s -100s) My one son was always completely convinced his 85 (with pipe/reeds and proper jetting) was MUCH faster than his completely stock 05 100. We were at a race that used transponders this year and he ended up running the stock 100 in the super-mini class. The lap times dont lie he was 3 sconds faster at a fast track(Budds Creek) and later 2 seconds faster at SFMX P

Sorry, didnt mean to post just yet.
Anyhow the 100 has a much smoother power delivery it is only a couple inches taller, shouldnt be a major issue in the dessert? The tire selection isnt that of a "mainstream" size, but never felt that was an issue . The 100 is a awesome bike . We ended up with a pipe and reeds on the stock 05 and that really woke it up! |

I realize this thread is ages old, but I was wondering if anyone knows if a KX100 engine will fit in a KX80 chassis? I'm thinking it would from all I've heard, but am not 100% sure. Also, would the 80cc radiator be sufficient, and the 80cc carb fit and be able to be rejetted fro the 100cc? Thanks!
