Default smokey 2000 KX125 time for a top end?

HEY, ive got a question about my bike that i hope someone in here will know the answer. First off my bike is a 2000 KX125, but the engine seized on me about six months ago so i bought a WHOLE used botttom end that is in great shape off a 2001 KX125. So my bike has a 2000 top end and a 2001 bottom end, first off this is ok right?

Now time for my question. It is really smokey and i cant ride it because of that. I am running 35:1 gas to oil mixture in it, ATF-F in the tranny. The compression checks out at 120 consistantly and jumps to 125psi every once and a while. I did some reasearch on this board about smokey engines and decided to replace the clutch side crank seal, which did nothing, still supper smokey. There seems to be NO water in the oil and vice-versa.

Do i need a new top end? If so, a new piston and rings and hone the cylinder? How do i know if i need all that or just a set of rings? Or is there something else that could be causeing the smoke? If i do need a new top end do i get a 2000 or 2001 (2000 right cuz my cylinder and head are a 2000) Is the 99-01 engines all the same?

Thanks for any and all help!!

Check your reeds.

If you have a 2000 topend, you can only order pistons for the 1999 and 2000 model. They changed the head and piston in 2001.

I run my pre-mix at 40:1 and keep the silencer packed on a regular basis. A dirty silencer or silencer in bad shape internally will cause a smokey motor. Looking at the edges of the reeds you will see if they are cracked or frayed. I would also lean it out a little by raising the clip either to the center or one above if it's already in the center.

the kawasaki service manual refers 99-02 (L1 - L4) model as the same for parts but different for jetting as they used different carbies.
I have an 02 kx125 but run a 98 prolite wiseco piston (only because thats what it came with when I bought it and it works fine so far)
Its had work done to the top end.
