    Default KX100 Oil Change

    Hello,

We got what I believe is a 2005 KX100 from a friend of ours. There kid has moved up to a 125cc bike. We were given the bike on a "loan".. but after a month or so of having it, they graciously gave the bike to us.

We've been riding it around alot and I wanted to perform some maintance on it. I had to replace both tubes at one shot! I've gotten good at replacing tubes by the way! haha

I was reading on what oil to use for the tranny on this site. So last night I drained out the old stuff. I noticed 32oz came out.. which is a quart.

So I put back in Valvoline ATF- Type F fluid like some of you have been using.

Now I am not sure what was used before.. but last night my nephew got on it and drove around the block twice.

He never had any shifting problems before. He kept stalling it a few times but got it going.

My question is.. is this normal coming from something other than ATF fluid?

I talked to the guy that gave us the bike, and he said that maybe the ATF fluid was too thin.. and would cause the clutch to slip.. that he used like 85w on his 125cc now....

    Any idea?

it is not uncommon that after you change the oil type you will proabbly have to adjust the clutch a little ...... the reason being is that the ATF fluid is thinner and will take alot more abuse than the thicker oil will .... Also I would ride it for about 20-30 mins then I would change the oil again just to make sure you get all the old oil out (becasue its 2 diffrent kinds and that doesnt mix too well in there)

The ATF will also slip a little more than the other oil will seeing as it is thinner but once you get everything adjusted adn clean out all the old oil it should be fine ....... as far as it bing too thin ..... Ive used this oil for awhile now and have yet to have a promblem ... and to be honest I think my clutch is easier to pull than my buddys who is using the stock oil

You got it backwards there guy. A thinner oil (Unless it is energy saving oil) will cause less slippage than the thick stuff, but not protect the gears quite as much. It is probably a coincidence that the clutch started to slip when you put ATF in. Adjust the clutch cable by the perch(Where the lever is) so there is enough freeplay you can get a nickel between the lever and the perch, without using any pressure.

Don't just guess on the amount of oil either, the correct amount is embossed on the side cover near the oil fill plug. The amount should be about 700ml.

ok, well, I took out 32oz and put in 32oz. It does say something like .66l on the case.

today we took it out and it was smelling funny and running bad. So I took some HD85w oil with us today. We changed it and it seemed to shift better, but now the bike seems to run funny at high rpms.. studders.. Is this something else... or could it be the oil!?!

I did gap the plug to .05.. it was off. Is that the right setting for the gap on the plug? that is what I was told to run it at. But I was also told I could run ATF Type F, but at the shop they were like NO way. Only around the block maybe to clean it out.. so I bought some 85W racing oil, since my nephew is pretty hard on it.

Just funny since it was running fine, until I got bored one day and cleaned it. The air cleaner, the plug.. haha.. goes to show, if it isnt broke, don't fix it. right? hehe

    thanks for your help guys..

Here is a video of it.. kinda.. just sounds bad..

I don't have one of how it sounded.. but just not sounding the same.

Gear saver 85w and AFT are not much different in viscosity! I run Honda's 80-85W trans oil, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with running type "F" ATF!

Everyone pointed out everything that you need to know. But I will add in this tid bit; If the clutches are worn close to or beyond tolerance, the clutch won't perform correctly. Also, most clutches have to be pre-soaked before installation and this saturates them with the type of oil you use, thus your friction plates are already saturated with the old oil he used.

Also, do not over fill the crankcase. If it say's .66l, then 1 qt was WAY too much. Most qt bottles have the clear strip on the side with oz and ml measurements on it.

Our 2007 KX100's hold 700ml, I just poor 350ml in my ratio rite cup, dump it in the bike and then repeat for the total of 700ml. This is more acurate than going by the site glass alone! As stated, put in the amount embossed on the cover because as Sapper69 stated, a full quart is too much and it will cause you problems.

ml's or cc's are the same thing. If you have a ratio rite cup you're set.

Besides, it makes your mixing time a whole lot easier.
