Thread a nut on the stud far enough that you can thread a second one on and tighten the top nut against the bottom nut using two wrenches. Then you're ready to back it out. No need to buy anything.

You may want to try something like this.

(add a w) ww.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93132

Why does this forum modify links??

^ Those are good tools but they can damage the stud. Just something to consider before ordering.

After a stud is removed, isn't it supposed to be replaced?

I actually ordered and tried that stud remover before i posted this thread and the teeth that grip onto the stud are too wide and will damage the threads...

Yeah, i guess if your going to replace the studs that will work but not if your going to reuse them...I would like to reuse mine since the threads are still good and save a little money. I'm going to try the 2 threaded nuts and see how that works

I have reused head studs before, although they do recommend replacing them due to stretch.

If you MUST reuse them, then go with the two nuts.

Not to stir up any problems, but out of the thousands of posts on top ends and the necessary parts to complete the job I have never heard studs mentioned. Yes studs do stretch, but the torque exerted on these I doubt is enough to do them any harm.BTW how many people have reused a 4.00 gasket or oring?

I beg to differ, Mr. Gorr recommends not removing the head when doing a top end unless it is really necessary, due to the fact that the heads studs are only good for a few uses. This is from the book "MX & Off-road Performance Handbook"

Normally I do remove the head and I have reused the studs more than once, but I do replace them every so often.

So are you partialy agreeing with me? I agree that it is a good idea to replace them from time to time. I have never, But I may have been a little lucky. As for the orings I will change them every other time. I have had them leak. I was refering to side covers more than head gaskets.

Yeah, I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with anyone, other than the fact that technically head studs should be replaced every so often because they do stretch, even at 20 ft. lbs of torque. But like you, I normally do not replace them, but I always use a new head gasket or orings depending upon the bike of course.

Just throwing in my worthless .02.

I have a tool thats made in england that will grip studs without sinking in to the threads. It has three pins that rotate and grab the stud. It looks like a plug socket but has a hole in the end the size of the bolt. I have 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm ones. I forget the name but could find out if you are still interested.

That other tool mentioned is a beast! It will def mangle your studs. Expecially if they are bit tight. If you ever have a stud that feels so tight it might break, soak it in PB Blaster with about three or four applications over the course of two days or so and they usually come free... I do an aweful lot of drilling out of studs and helicoiling for guys who are too impatient with these kinds of problems...
