    Default Leatt Brace

We just recived our Leatt brace .
Have to say it's a well made item !!
Had to make some mod's to my sons chest protector [cut the shoulder pads out a bit] .
    Now it fits perfect .
Anyone else running with leatt brace.
I can see it becoming a madatory piece of equipment . But they need to drop the price before that happens .
But if it can stop a neck injury it's well worth evey $$$

I have been considering buying them for my 3 youngest boys who race.

I like to have all possible safety gear and once they get used to it young, they don't mind wearing it. I'm hung up a bit however,as it seems that there is some controversy over the product. There are now some reports that it can cause damage to spinal cord/and or the #3 and 4 vertabrea in what would possibly be a non injuring accident. ...as well as some claiming that it is increasing broken collar bones...
I'm not sure if I buy any of that story about the pros and cons yet. I'm still trying to decide. Some pros are wearing them...some say never...

But some are afraid to try new things anyway.EVS claim to be releasing a similar device in late MAY of this year that is not only cheaper, but is claimed to be sort of less agressive at keeping the neck straight.....sort of in between the Leatt and a normal neck roll. It looks very much like the Leatt, but claims to not break collar bones unnecessarily?...

I'm not sure what to do.

I thought of the EVS brace also but i just dont feel they have put the research and development into the brace as much as leatt has .
My son says it feels great and it is made out of high quality material.
As for causing spinal damage i have never read that , and if worn correctly the brace will not impact the collar bone . [but who has not broke their collar bone ???????]
It is proven to reduce the risk of a neck injury but not prevent it but that is good enough for me , The kids are getting faster and faster and its just not worth the risk and i consider this as important as a helmet !!!!!
Now i just have to save up some $ and get my own ..

I was planning on getting the EVS brace later this spring, due to the high price of the Leatts and the supposedly increased amount of broken spines and collarbones, but if I had $400 burning a hole in my pocket I would go get a Leatt today.

The dealer I work at sells Leatt braces, and we've had trouble keeping them in stock! As an EMT, I really believe that most dirt riders should where them, it makes me job easier

I bought a Leatt earlier this year. I will not ride without it now. It really does not restrict me on the bike. The only thing you really cannot do is put your head down too far in the front or back or side to side. It is designed so if a person crashes and lands directly on the top of their head, the brace will stop the helmet from pressing down on the spine. I feel a little more confident with one on. It is a really well made device. There are carbon fiber inserts to adjust to the width of your chest and all of the material is attached with velcro and can be removed and cleaned as needed.

There was a guy I read about that was wearing a Leatt when he crashed and was paralyzed below the area where the Leatt stops protecting on the spine which is about halfway down the back. Without it he may have been paralayzed from the neck down.

A buddy I ride with has a Leatt and took a dive over the handlebars on a small jump. He broke his collarbone and was out for about 6 weeks without surgery. The Leatt does press a little on the collarbone at point of impact, but it really does not take that much pressure to break a collarbone. Something like 8-12lbs pressure. Plus the collarbone is the most common sports "break" injury. Anyone would rather break a collarbone than a neck.

You could do a search on chest protectors that are compatible with a Leatt, to find a little extra padding between the collar and the Leatt.

If I had kids and they rode, they would have one before I bought them a bike!

I checked out the EVS brace at a moto shop and to me they seem a little flimsy. I used to use a neck roll, and the EVS is basically one of those, with some plastic tied in with it.

I forgot to mention JTpaintball70, tell your EMT friends not to cut off the Leatt or the boots if it can be avoided!

I've seen it happen and it is not pretty. That's about $1000 worth of gear.
