From what I have been told most companies are going to stop production of the 2 stroke. I have been thinking of buying a new bike in a couple of years and I am not sure if I want a four stroke given the price of maintanence. I wish one of the companies would invest some time in developing a new two stroke. I am sure a lot of you have kids and if they race it is really expensive doing it with a four stroke. Yamaha and AMA has made racing very expensive for all of us and something needs to give. I hope a two stroke is developed that will dominate and bring the 2 stroke back to life.

I read in a motox mag that honda has stopped all 2 stroke technology (they did it in 2007 i believe) but i think some of the other manufactures will still make them...i don't think they will be totally done away with for awhile especially if people keep buying them.
I was also told by a dealer that the ama is going to make some rule changes to help make the 2 strokes more competitive with the 4 stroke because the ama still wants people to race 2 strokes because they are cheaper to have and maintain. Whether that's true or not i don't know Last edited by 2stroke173 : 07-24-2008 at 03:58 PM. |

I know Kawasaki and Suzuki have stoped production of the two stroke. I am not sure if Yamaha is still making them but I have not seen a new Yamaha two stroke in 2 years. Looks like the only company still making the two stoke is KTM. If AMA changes the regulations on two strokes it will be to late and the two stroke will be dead.

2008 was supposed to be the last year for any of the major four to sell a two-stroke motocrosser. And Yamahog was it with the YZ250.
But, I see what may be a 2009 YZ250. 2009 Yamaha YZ250 Home, information, info KTM offers three models of two-stroke: 125, 150, and 250cc. Don't let the Nature Nazis talk you out of a two-stroke. They are not the problem. |

Honda has stopped, the others are still built and available in Canada ands other places ,but not imported to the US. We have a 06 kx 125,but it was stopped in 05 in the US(so many people think there is no such thing as a 06)...but it IS ending eventually, suzuki will not make after the 09 model year, but there has been no discontinuing talk on the YZ125 in Canada. I beleive the KX two strokes only have a couple of years left in Canada as well.
The thing is,..once the American division of these companies stop importing them,..it drops the sales volume enough that the manufacturer will end them sooner or later. SOOooo...to all of you in the states....any time you get the chance, stand up against the greenpeace hippies and tree huggers and try to get them to focus on things like that would make a difference(like 1,000,000 deisel transport trucks or something)....and stop picking on the few recreation dirt riders.

You may look for a new leftover at a dealer. There is a 2006 KX250 at a dealer in Rochester, NY asking $4599.
It's easy to legislate against dirt riders, snowmobilers, etc. They are an easier taget and less unified than the trucking industry or large corporations. |

They stopped selling, putting R+D money into them, etc. because they weren't selling. There are 1 million threads on this all over the internet.
Yamaha and KTM make full-sized two-strokes in 2009. I wish you luck if you are wanting a new one in 2 years from now. In an AMA amateur race, a 250 two-stroke competes against a 250 4-stroke. That is in amateur, not pros.

I put most of the blame on AMA. AMA was atament that the four stroke could not compete against the two stroke that they allowed the Yamaha 426 to run with the 250's. That is almost double the displacement of the 250. When the four stroke started winning races all the manufactures began to invest all R&D into the four stroke. Off corse a lightweight 450 four stroke is going to beat a 250. There is more torque, compression and traction ect. I would just like to see a manufacture reinvent the wheel on the 2 stroke. What if you had a two stroke that had a constant power band? A power band that was always there when you twisted the throttle just a little bit, I bet that would get the 250 out of the hole. I am sure if a little R&D was put towards it, it could be done.

I also think that the only way the major companies can promote their new bikes is through the AMA. If all the pro's are ridding four strokes then everyone will want a four stroke. The children of today will not even think of buying a two stroke. Kids will want to ride what ever Stewart rides. That is the way the market works. If the two stroke is not a competitve bike in Pro AMA then all hope is lost.

yes 2-strokes are a dying breed. good EPA and politicians talking out there a$$ have put the last nails in the coffin as needed. 2-strokes will disappear/become illegal before 2 much longer IMHO which is major shame. i love my 2-strokes they will be missed.

Hi guys,
I have 2 grand kids that race flat track here in Aus. Was talking to the head of Husqvarna Aus last Sunday (his boys race there also) and he said that now that Kwaka is stopping production of the KX65, Husky is considering producing one. If they all stop production of the little 2 smokers the kids just starting out are going to miss out on some valuable experience in my opinion. Just as an example, the Aus under 13 years, 85cc champ entered the 65cc class on a KLX110 just for a bit of fun. He ran it with the C grade kids and got hammered. While I'll admit I have a 4 stroke bush bike ATM, I also have a 1977 RM80B, a 1981 DS80, and a 1977 KM90. The little 2 strokes are huge amount of fun, and my grand kids love them. Kel |

If you can find a Husquavarna Baja 500 1969 model it can be worth up to $200,000 I hear depending on condition.
So ya 2 strokes can be more than just fun, but valuable to.
