they just go by part numbers and yes the 98 99 00 01 all have diff part numbers they have diff porting i think the 01 02 is the same...if you were to get any one of the cylinders it should work they are the same design and everything just better port timing through the years. although i could be wrong but i doubt it

Is it totalled?
If not give a shot at fixing it with say LA sleeve or a shop like that.

so you dont have the cylinder or head? so that means you would need a complete cylinder, head, and powervalve. If so YES a complete cylinder off a 99-02 will fit for sure. i was just worried about the 98 powervalve working with a 99-02 cylinder even though they are the same design the 98 went a little further to the piston to seal better and when really hot like on the gas for a long time in deep loam would somtimes contact the piston on some 98's
also the 98 the valve would open all the way and over extend at times and sometimes get cocked open. pro-circuit sold a powervalve cover that had a set screw that limited it from over extending and therfore not **** itself into that stuck open deal. i raced this model extinsively it handled soooooo well had a great midrange hit. but if you are using a complete cylinder head powervalve off a 99-02 i promise it will fit and work great. |

You dod not even have the core parts to turn in, so have you looked for a parts bike, or a complete donor motor at least.
As dlowe said already, another jug should work from those years, and you need a new piston, and pin, bearings, etc anyways. How are you for a crank etc?
