transmission stuck in 4th or 5th gear

I was riding tonight on my lil 1984 kdx80,and when I came to a stop and take off again...the transmission didn't want to downshift..so I had to figure out a way to drive home in 4th or 5th,...think 4th..but thats not the important part....I am wondering if anyone knows what I should do...I'm thinking its probly something with the shifter linkage..but I have never taken anything like this apart..thanks for the help guys

I took the engine out of the frame...its in my truck...now I am going to start pulling it apart...starting with the head and stuff to pull apart the crankcase halves...now to get to the shifter drum and linkage..what side is that easiest to get to...cause I don't really wanna get right into the gears and stuff of the tranny...cause I know nothing about that

Not sure about the location on a kdx but on an '02 125 kx I had the shift lever move down a bit (splines started to strip) and was hitting the frame which stopped it from down shifting, a bent gear lever will also do it. Just clutching at straws!! before you strip it down.

yeah the splines were stripped..that was fixed...thats not the problem anymore...it won't downshift is what I am saying...thanks

i think he say if its striped its not postion right so it wont down shift try to pull of and move up

yeah I understand...but its positioned right...the shifter will go down to the end of its movement as a regular shifter does...but will not go down in gears..nothing happens..it stays in 5th

have you try to down shift when like try to bump start it other than that proble tho screrows mesed up ??? good luck you no how to make my bike go foword?????
