OK I see posts on here about people asking about how to identify their engine by using the engine S/N. I am now asking the same thing, since I cannot locate a link to the information. I am NOT talking about the 17 digit VIN - got that figured out. I want to know is there a link/chart/something that allows you to decode the engine S/N to identify its production year. The Bike is a 2004 KX 85 (A4)
The engine in question has the following S/N KX085AE015009 Thanks in Advance....... |

I don't know of a chart. You can try to call a dealer and ask. On the older models, they had a book that stated a certain model year was engines starting with engine # xxxxxxxxxx.

Bike was bought used
Yea tried the dealer with no luck! I guess it does not exist or they do not track them by S/N, I am sure someone at the factory knows. Anybody speak japanese? LOL!! I have to replace the kips govenor shaft and the part I ordered for the 04 does not match what is on the bike. The bike has the old style 01-03 part, so I was just going to go a step further (or so I thought) and see if somebody pulled a switch selling an 04 frame with an older motor - that is the only reason I am trying to find the info. it is one of the very few parts that had any changes done it from 03 - 04. |

Can you post the VIN?
The Owner Info / Parts Diagrams section of the Kawasaki site has a few specification sheets for the bikes of the last few years. These have starting engine numbers for certain year / models. For the 2001 - 2008 models (too early for 2009, apparently), they show: Engine No. Range KX085AE000001— ? You may want to search around the internet to see if someone else mentions his engine number and year of purchasem when discussing a new bike. IF, IF, IF the engine number matches with the production number at the end of the VIN, then that points at a 2003 engine. That is just me comparing your given engine number to the last 6 digits of the VIN over the years. 015000 is the first VIN for a 2003 model.
