    Default My $300 KX250 1986

Not to be out done by "My $250 KX250 1986" thread seen here:
    My $250 KX250 1986 - E2S

    Just picked up like 3 hours ago a 1986 KX250 for $300

    The BAD:
Front tire is dry rotted. (Had to put this first cause I only have one good front)
    Does not run.
    Mikuni VM round carb.
    Reeds.
Don't see coolant. Where did it go? The seller didn't have an answer.
Lot of oil under engine. Shift shaft seal leaky? Most of it is red filter oil?
Rust in a lot of places
Seat mounting tab on frame has been spot welded.
    Rear brakes pads almost gone
Cylinder has a lot of vertical scratches and unknown bore.
    Gas looks brown.
Someone painted the carb boot and it is flaking.
    Pipe has dents.
    No case saver.
    Loose shifter (maybe tighten it?)
Should have tried to offer $250

    The GOOD:
Cylinder is sleeved and has compression.
    Has spark.
Front forks not rusted. No leaks. Feel good.
Rear shock good and not looking stock with no leaks.
    Brakes work.
Shifts in all gears and turns the crankshaft.
    Oil is clean (new?)
    Clutch basket is not grooved.
Pro Circuit Pipe / DG Silencer
    Seat cover
    Plastics and tank
    Rims / rear tire
    Chain / sprockets ok.
    Frame/ triples / bars / swingarm
    Grips
Air box carb boot (I have three bad ones)
    Air filter
Nut and bolt heads not all rounded and stripped.
    Radiators
    Carb boot
    Pretty much complete.

Dude, thats awesome shape for a 22 year old dirt toy. I bought a 91 kx250 for 550 bucks. The only problems Iv ever had was every time i take it apart to clean it,... I run into another rusted bolt and it breaks off in the threads. Then i have to take a 10mm nut and hold it over the busted threads and weld it to the busted bolt. then slowly back it out with a 3/8ths impact drill. hahah. looks alright man, definatly salvagable, but you will end up dumping some cash into that to make it run. I spent 100 on a new carb slide, replaced my fork seals, and did a clutch job on it. 550+ parts... under 800 still. =)
    Went to the playground!
    Where all the kiddies play!
    Pulled out my 240!
    AND I BEGAN TO SPRAY!

Reeds are the old style boyesen and no good.

I am guessing if I put on a Rad Valve intake and carb setup pre-jetted, it will start right up.

It is way too cold right now to even think about it.

I already have someone lined up to buy the motor for $200

Did you check out my $250 KX250 link above? That one will be tough to beat.

It did run but it had carb problems and the head gasket leaked.

The bike has been dismantled. The complete electrical went on my 1986 Tecate. I should have just swapped motors.

    The crank bearings are good.

The forks went on my other bike since I blew a seal on one.

The sleeve bore was stock 70mm. The head was loose and therefore leaking coolant (and don't know if it is even warped).

Found more standard nuts and bolts that did not belong. Frame thread for Gas tank was stripped some and tapping did not help too much, the guido held the bolt in with silicone.

My 89 kx250 has a shifter problem. I'm positive it is in the shaft cause i went through 2 brand new shift levers. It will keep loosening up, so if you keep tightening the shift lever on the bad shaft, you will just break the bolt off inside of the lever. so just a heads up. big pain in the ...
