hey everyone.. i have a 1986 ninja 600r. now the problem is, sometimes after sitting even for a day.. starting it the next morning can become impossible.. sometimes you wont even get spits or sputters. you have to take the seat off and spray starter spray in the air box. now a little background is... the bike was dropped from the previous owner and the take is dented in a little bit forward on top of the petcock. i took the petcock out and it doesnt look damaged at all.
now the weird part is, i remember for a good 4 days, i was able to go outside after letting it sit over night, and it started RIGHT up. instantly like it was warm.. which tells me it might be something loose or whatnot. I also have to switch the tank to reserve after it going to half a tank i think because of the dents... i also have ran into the problem that it would sometimes stall when coming to a stop, and i would have to throw the choke on for it to even start and stay running.which tells me it is something with fuel delivery? maybe? when starting it with the choke, it can start at 2k rpms, and then jump to 4k.. and i cant even idle it down with the choke without it dying sometimes :/ any help is appreciated, any other info needed let me know. |

your carbs need to be cleaned thoroughly, an inline fuel filter installed, and some valve clearance check done. this usually clears up a lot of these issues.

Heyy thanks for the response
I did a carb clean already. everything looked great, but cleaned anyway. the diaphrams were a bit weirdly shaped. like.. they had a bit of an odd shape to them..... besides that everything else was fine. also, when i got the bike, the mixture screws had the factory plugs removed and they were all set to 1 1/2 turns...... so i think the previous owner did this. could this contribute? how would i go abouts setting it correctly. Thirdly, is there a guide you could point me towards to go abouts doing valves? thanks |

The mixture screws will probably work much better at 2.5 turns out than 1.5, screw them in GENTLY, until they seat, then go 2.5 turns out from that point. dont force those screws, if they break, you're effed.
valves are easy, look up the Concours valve adjustment procedure for the 1000cc model, its the same procedure, different clearance specs. you should invest in a service manual to maintain your bike properly though.
