Smells like gas, 250R

Hi I went to visit a Ninja 250 today, 2005, 4000mi, great condition, never dropped.

I started it up and let it run, reving it a bit, and adjusting the choke. My dad said he noticed the engine was releasing a gas smell. Is that okay? If not, any ideas of what could be the problem? Thanks!

that usually suggests it needs a good carb cleaning and petcock rebuild. nothing seriously wrong, its just normal wear/tear/sitting things really.
