From my experience, my suggestion would be that the bike be completely crated if is to be loaded with other items so that if something else on the load shifts the bike will be protected. I had mine shipped from the U.K. when we moved back to the States and the right muffler was dented - it was in an open sided steel motorcycle crate - most likely when the container was loaded or off-loaded at one of the docks.
