Default Gas Tank Questions

Got a weird tank size question. On my '89 Ninja 750, I usually get up to about 120 miles on the tank and the light will come on, normally on the stand at idle, due to the lean. If I fill it up at that point, the tank holds 2.75 gallons. I let it get a little higher a couple weeks ago, and the light was on solid. I filled up at around 150-160 miles, and it held right at 3 gallons. I didn't think much of it until I looked in my owner's manual and it shows I have a 5.5 gallon tank. I'm wondering, should the light really come on that low? That would mean I've still got over 2 gallons left, and about another 100 miles on a tank. I don't have a reserve, so I don't want to risk it alone and try to get more out of it. If I look in the tank when it shows empty, I can see like a metal divider plate, and can tell there is gas under it, but can't see how much. Sorry for the rambling, but just trying to figure out if it's really empty and the manual is wrong, for some reason, or if it just comes on wayyyy too early.

hey, not sure about the 750 but i have a 94 600R. I had to completely drain the tank when it was being shipped from VA to the Republic of Georgia (long story).

I drove the bike until I hit the reserve then I drove it a few more miles. Too nervous to run out of gas on the road, so i figured i'd just run it down in the parking lot. my old bike when you hit reserve it was 0.5 gallons left. this bike i thought the same. no way! I ended up physically draining over 1.5 gallons from the tank AFTER i hit reserve. So I think mine is about a 2 gallon or just shy of it, reserve. I never would have thought it was that much left.

My bike has a gauge, no low fuel light. And according to the manual and sales brochure from that year, it has about a 4.8 gallon tank.

So, based upon that I would go with the idea that you have about 2 gallons left.
