Default 250 lost power on freeway, now it won't turn on!

so i was coming back home at ten from an eight hour shift, i was on the freeway, and all of a sudden the bike loses power (at first i thought, did i run out of gas?!) that wasn't the case, anyway, i thought i heard a noise so i assume the chain broke (it didn't) or something and i immediately pulled in the clutch and coasted for a good while, (i was in the carpool lane - i could only go on the far left to stop at this point) then after fifteen minutes, cop sees me, and to end the story, i walked the bike two miles off the freeway and to my house, i'll never forget my 20th birthday -.-
anyway now it won't start, it makes a buzzing noise from the starter solenoid, i bought a fresh new battery and it STILL won't start, my only thought is that the engine seized, do you guys have any ideas? i was JUST about to sell this bike and buy a 650 : /

Did you bother taking a multi to test the battery? Starters usually take a LOT of juice to start a bike. When a bike is grounded out(positive is touching a negative) you will get a nice "click" sound everytime you try to start it.

As for walking it two miles to your house, did you try pop starting it? Roll it along in second gear and pop the clutch to get it started?

i went to the local bike shop today and before i went i called and they said the battery would be good to go by the time i get there, i noticed my old battery didn't even let me honk, this one does but still doesn't start : / and actually today i tried to pop start it, i went down a little hill just behind my house and nothing, local shop wants 20 to pick it up and 80 to check whats wrong with it -.- the dealer i was talking to about the 650 said he'd take the bike even if not running, but im sure i would get practically nothing out of it

Most engine seizures can be caused by either low oil or running excessively lean. I'd pull a sparkplug and see if the center electrode shows signs of Aluminum bits stuck to it, or White in color, both indicating a lean/overheating condition.

i was actually wondering if maybe it was the oil because last time i checked, i could actally SEE the oil in the glass circle thingy, but now it just looks foggy or something, thats why i thought, maybe an engine seizure, if i just drain the oil now and leave it like that for a while, would it be bad? im not sure when i'll have enough time to go buy oil, id probably just order it online or something, i just mainly want to check if i see any metal pieces in it, :/ but if it is a seizure im screwed huh -.-

If the engine is truly seized, nothing short of a teardown will fix it. It might be as simple as new piston and rings, or new bearings. Kinda depends on how long it ran with low oil.....

is it possible that i can just put some phresh oil and it'll let the motor run? when i turn the key it just buzzes, it doesn't turn the engine over or anything

If you pull the sparkplug out, try turning the engine over by pushing it in gear, if no luck, call the shop about the cost of a rebuild, as putting oil in a seized engine rarely makes it run again....

Some bikes take a 13/16" sparkplug socket, others maybe a 5/8" with a ratchet and extension.

Spend the money and have the shop take a look at it. $20 to pick up and $80 to take a peek... that is cheap!

AS an add, a 250 running at freeway speed on a regular basis will require fastidious attention to engine oil level.

so i took out the old oil today, (figured id do it before paying to have it inspected, so if i saw any metal i'd know it was the engine) and i didn't see any big metal pieces, i stuck my face pretty close to the clear plastic i emptied it in and all i saw after looking really hard was very very very small sparkles, smaller than glitter, and i dont know if it was just dust or something at that point, anyways after i started pouring it into the bottle, i saw one very very small piece of metal, like REALLY small, like half a grain of rice small, so should i assume its the engine? it just got 10,000 miles on it, or should i assume it's electrical? either way, in a week or two i'll send it over to the mech.

You should have left the oil in because if your problem is mechanical, examining the oil would be part of their diagnostic procedure. (I hope)

Be sure and post back with their findings.

bogus @_@ well there's still oil where the filter is, i didn't wanna take it out, either way, ima let em see the bike, if it isn't electrical i guess i'll have a fun spring break project engine swapping, is it hard to do?

Its labor intensive. I know our local shop quotes most engine work at 500-600. But just buying an engine for it will cost you a pretty penny. Depending on what year it is, 08 and up will be more expensive than a post dated engine. I really wouldnt reccomend it...especially if you dont know how to check spark plugs....How mechanically inclined are you? And how easy do you have access to tools? There are a LOT of tools required for rebuilding an engine PROPERLY that are specifically for engines. The tools are expensive too. My toolset for my first year at college costs as much as a BRAND NEW 2012 650r. That doesnt include motorcycle jack or engine hoist.

The tiny bits of metal shavings in the oil would probably be aluminum shavings from running on low oil. Usually they would look like glitter or sparkles and there will be at least a dozen or more.

hmm, so if i see some shido in there are the chances high that it was an engine seizure?
also, im new to bikes, i have experience on cars, although i know there are big differences between the two, as far as tools go, i think im set, i can get the ones i need through friends who are mechanics, but i do have a nice set, not SUPER nice, but nice haha

I would get a diagnosis first and then take it from there. Guesswork is pointless at this time.
