Adjusted the valves on my 91 600r (41k miles) today. My manual called for .005-007 intake and .007-.009 on exhaust, so I went with my .006 and .008 feeler gauges.
About half felt right but the other half felt about a thousandth of an inch too tight, as I could put the gauge in but was tight. I adgusted these so there was "slight tension" but noticeably tighter on the next size up and could not insert the gauge 2 sizes up at all. My bike seems to run better now (that is to say perfect), but I hear a slight ticking around 1,000-4,000 rpm that wasnt there before the adjustment. Is it normal for these bikes to tick a little? also, can anyone tell me if these valves will tighten or loosen as they wear? Appreciate any knowledgeable feedback. shim under/over will get tighter because of the valves receding into the head
screw and locknut will get looser because of the screw tip wearing down when i adjust i set it so that the size i want is snug and the next size up wont go without forcing it. so in your case you actually set them on the loose side but thats no biggie. if you have screw and locknut on this bike then they will be noisey. shim under/over shouldnt make a whole lot of noise though. |

I wonder why I didnt find any loose valves, but about half were a little tight? I guess they would have been okay at the bottom of the range, but I adjusted them all in the middle of the range. I should have just let them alone, I guess.
