Finally Got Into First Gear

i saw on a zx10 and some 636"s that there is a exhaust flipper valve in the ex pipe with cables hooked to it. What ios the purpose of this? I am very curious what its funtion is. How would the machine act if it was defective?

That butterfly valve is supposed to maximize performance throughout the powerband. The position of the valve varies depending on throttle position, gear, and speed. I'm not entirely sure how the bike would perform if it were to malfunction; hopefully it defaults to an open position should it fail. I haven't had any probs with it yet.
However, once you dump the stock exhaust and replace w/ a aftermarket slip or full system that valve and servo mechanism are removed. Most systems come w/ a device that tricks the ECU into thinking the servo motor is still attached so that one's EFI light doesn't remain illuminated.

yeah, I've only seen them on the 05 or later 6R, 6RR and, zx10's.

Yamaha has been using a system much like the one on your bike for about 15 years. I think the FZ1000 was the first in NA.
It helps with exhaust flow and backpressure.
