Different states have different laws.
These laws range from "Class covers everything" to "Class required but you still have to take both DMV tests", though in MOST states the class does waive the riding portion of the test, but you still need to take the written test.

In California, you CAN limit trips to the DMV to one by taking the class and waiting until after you receive your certificate (about 2 weeks). You still have to take the written test (which includes half of the regular vehicle test, so brush up on that or they'll pull your vehicle license!), but the class satisfies the riding test.
If you are under 21, there's no option... you must take the class.

At the time you finish the class, they give you a signed business card. It's no good at the DMV, but is good enough to show to your insurance company for a discount.
The ERC allows for a further discount.

Most people in CA make two trips to the DMV... one to take the written test and get their permit, and the second one after passing to get their license.

All in all, it took about 10 minutes. Thank god I know the secret DMV location where no one else goes. I tried to go to the one closest to me and the wait was 4 hours! There were at least 50 people in line and I saw 1 lady working. 1 person.

True in some (maybe most) states. In CA the card they give you does nothing at DMV. They mail you a form called a DL389, this form is what you present to the DMV for the waiver.

If you have not taken the paper exam at DMV you will probably have to take that as well, as the one at the MSF class usually doesn't count. Otherwise, same happened to me, took in my form, showed it to the guy at the counter, 5 mins later walked out the door with my M1 endorsement.

piece of cake.
