Engine swap of a ’94 ZX-9

I recently purchased a ‘94 ZX-9 project bike. The engine is not as ‘repairable’ as I hoped, so I’m going to need a new one. After looking around I have realized ‘94-‘97 ZX-9 engines are not as easy to come by (in good condition) as ’98-’01 engines are.

Is it possible to do an engine swap to a newer model with minimal fabrication?? Other options or suggestions welcomed!!

I was told by a tech. from a local shop that a ‘98-’01 engine should bolt right into a ’94-’97 frame. Wiring harness(es) (along with other items) will likely not be compatible, but as far as having to fab. engine mounts, this should not be needed.

Can anyone confirm this?? This info seems contradictory to other review info I’ve gotten regarding the ’98-’01 ZX-9… ‘new design’ and the engine is part of a ‘stress member of the frame’. This could also be marketing/PR stuff.
