I thought I had seen it all. I was looking at Ebay this morning and came across an ad for a 2006 Goldwing. It comes with airbags that are installed on the gas tank in case of an accident. Take a look at the pics and it shows the airbags. It seems like it might hurt you more than it would save you. Looks like it may cause more neck and back trauma in an accident.

I have actually read several articles on this and seen videos of them in action, and they are shown to be effective. It sounds a little odd at first but the single most common type of bike accident is when someone pulls out in front of a bike and you slam into them head on. It wouldn't work on every style bike out there, but I can see it making sense in some of the big cruisers.

Okay at what point does the goldwing become a car with no doors? Seems like they're pretty close now.

People don't really get hurt from deployment of airbags, as they are fully deployed before you get even close to them in almost all cases. When people get hurt by airbags it's because they have been in an accident, so they get less hurt than they would without. Only cases of people getting hurt that have any merit are of the ones with people having their seat too close. But in almost all cases people are hurt far less and often it is limited to scrapes and scratches and small cuts or light burns as compared to dead or extremely injured.
I have seen the video of this system and the bag is fully deployed in a fraction of a second, far sooner than the rider actually travels far enough forward to make contact with it. I also the same crash with the same bike just no airbag and the rider would have been dead for sure, with the airbag he would have been sore for sure, maybe some injuries, but would have lived. I don't see how the injuries that may be incured from an airbag would be less than those you would get from the side of the car. I support the concept on appropriate bikes, but I certainly don't know if it is meant for all of them. |
