Hello all.
I like my little ninjas low end. I understand that a 2-1 system will give me more power, top end, etc. I dont want it. I want to keep the 2-2 setup. I do, however, need new cans. I dont want stock, and about all I can find are Sarachus slip ons. I also saw a video from a GS500 of a dude that threw a GSX-R1000 can on his GS500, and it sounded better. Is there any pipes, or aftermarket slipons for other bikes that I can use for the EX500 that will sound good/ not lose performance? 2001 EX500/ninja 500r - 3100 miles thanks Matt |

First off you will not get any more performance out of an exhaust upgrade, you will just screw up the mixture. The carbs on the EX500 are super sensitive, so all you can really change is just a slip on, and even some of those you should be careful with. Also if you get a 2-1 on top of messing up your mixture and destroying your low and mid range you have to pull off a bunch of parts. You lose you lower fairing and center stand, stick with just slip ons.
The sarachu have a great great tone and are designed to work fine without re-jetting and without screwing around with the carbs. I have them and like them. When I got my EX it had a set of Suzuki slip ons and it sounded like crap, louder, but really bad. Stick with the Sarachu, look for some used ones on Ebay. |

kick: Now, now...no need to be so hard on chupo--he hasn't been gifted with knowledge from "The FOG".
chupo: kick may sound extreme and hard @ssed but he's correct on every single point that he made; no exhaust in the world is going to get more out of the bike. The only reason to change the exhaust is to get a meatier sound. If you want more power, sell the 500 and get a 636. The EX500 is just that: a half-litre engine with a peak of 50 HP. The bike is already tuned for peak power right out of the showroom. If you're looking to improve performance you can raise the back end, work on the sag, stiffen the suspension and get steel braided break lines--but nothing will make the bike more powerful. Sorry...

Guys, I have read lots of FOGs posts, and also realize that even he admits that, while very minimal, airbox and exhaust can give you SMALL gains. As I said in the origional post, I want to keep the 2-2 setup.
What I am asking is if there are some pull off, or aftermarket cans that will be cheaper than the 300 bucks for Sarachus that will improve sound and not lose power. that is the last line in my origional post. I know I wont gain power, I am looking for better sound with no loss of power. I appreciate the help, both of you. Thanks Matt |
