Default 636 Dampner question

I just purchased another motorcycle to add to my collection, this one is a 2006 636, with ohlins suspension and all sorts of other goodies! My question is to the people with 05 or 06 636's what dampner do you use. This is going to be my new race bike, time to retire the 99, problem is I already have a scotts but the 06 requires you to drill and tap the frame which I am not crazy about. Has anybody else drilled their frame and do you know if ohlins makes one like my 06 10R has. I would rather put the ohlins on than drill my frame for the scotts, the extra $350 for the ohlins is better than drilling holes in my new frame.

I have an '05 636, which is pretty much the same as yours, and no, ohlins does not make one for the 05-06 636. I don't like the idea of drilling either. You could try a GPR or Hyperpro damper, which I have heard good things about both.

Thanks for the help, I will probably go the hyperpro route, I honestly havent heard of anybody with an 05 or 06 636 that has drilled their frame.

No problem. Yea, I'd be leary about drilling it. That would also prob void the warrenty too.

Your probably right, then what if say you misdrill or strip the holes then what, is your brand new race bike totaled. I plan on using this bike for nothing but running wera and trackdays so cosmetically Im not worried its functionability that I need.

I've got a Matris M4. It was expensive but it is another bolt-on option.

Sweet dampner, I am a fan of the scotts, i am probably going to get the GPR seeing it is a little cheaper than the others, I have a lot to buy before march and the extra 150 will be spent elsewhere.

I put A GPR damper on my 05 636 this year and I can't say enough good things about it. Tightened the steering right up for agressive riding, no headshake at all anymore, it's simple to install and I like that I can change the settings on it while I'm riding.

Hey guys, I see some good information being throwen back and forth here and would like to use it. The problem: I'm new to bikes and I have not a clue what a steering damper does. I've got ideas, but i'd rather get a straight answer then guess. So, if you guys don't mind, can you tell me what a steering damper does and what benifits you get from it? Thanks

It will basically eliminate or mostly get rid of handle bar wobble/shake while riding on track or pretty aggressively on the street. Its just connects from the handle bars to the frame or some solid point. When the handle bars start goin back n forth to quickly the damper slows it down. I know theres a better way of explaining this but thats a quick overview haha

How aggressive do you have to drive to get the head shake/speed wobbles? I'm not going to say I'm good or anything near an aggressive rider, but I've gotten the bike up there in speed and I haven't felt anything wobble except my own stupidity when I change lanes or shift my weight. I've got an '06 636 and I'm pretty sure it didn't change to much from '05-'06. But are the shakes pretty much all the steering damper affects?

If you are going fast and hit a nice bump or rock, it can get you wobbles. They are adjustable, on the HWY I would set it tighter and on the twisty a little looser. You will find which setting fits you...I forgot how many clicks I had.

Is that for the Damper? or for the normal equipment?

the dampener.. i believe all of not most 1000's come with them. and i think the new Suzuki's come with them... i had one on my old zx10 and they are very use full. but for a beginner sometimes you can forget how tight you have it and when you need to turn quick... your bikes not going to

Ohlins makes one for the 05-06 636 probably the best choice, Kyle Racing sells it for $499. Scotts is probably a close second in my opinion. But you do have to drill the 2 holes by the tank for the bracket (drill and tap supplied).
I've heard good things about the Hyperpro and also the Arrow, which are both also shaft type vs. the rotory style of the Scotts or GPR.
The GPR is the least expensive but I personally dont like the way it looks.
I'm going Ohlins!
