    Ditto.
An MSF instructor asked me to call him when I hit 3k to sign up for the ERC and get into the program as a ridercoach.
Over 8k now and I still consider myself somewhat of a newbie.

6-8 months and 3k on a 250? Not ready for a 636. As above, 650, or a MeanStreak, sure... perfect next bikes, but 636? Too much potential for road pizza.

    No it's not.
I bought my bike the first weekend of June, learned how to ride (street, I had experience offroad), and had 5k on it by October.

    Default Seriously reconsider...

I'm gonna have to agree, 3k isn't much. I've been putting 1k/month on my bike since last May except for November when I didn't ride because I got hit and had to wait for my foot to heal. After putting over 8k on my bike as of now, I think that I might be ready for a used 3 or 4 y/o Z1000 in May of '08. I'll have to re-evaluate at that time...2 years and 23,000+ miles after getting my 500.

I didn't want to chime in on this thread because I know that my opinion would probably be ignored by you but I think that you need realize that taking shortcuts or trying to find ways around "the system" are symptoms of a person who lacks both responsibility and maturity. I know, because I used to be like that in my early 20's, somehow I've almost made it to 40. Using your dad's name for the insurance making him liable for your possible mistake and justifying it by saying that his rates won't go up? You didn't even consider the fact that he'd be getting sued for your accident by virtue of the fact that his name would be on the title and insurance policy. Lack of responsibilty and maturity...

I just hope that you don't hurt yourself if you get the 636.

I did exactly what you did. Drove a old bike for 2000km then bought my zx6r...2 months later and 1 rainy day later I set her down on the nice pavement! I can't wait to see how much my insurance will go up this season!http://www.kawasakimotorcycle.org/fo...d-my-zx6r.html
I too thought I was ready, but after riding my zx6r, after I layed it down, I realized you can never be ready for any bike. You may be able to handle the power, but if you're chicken stripping everywhere you're not ready and probably not ready for the real dangers on the road. Take a look at this, guy wasn't messing around, just trying to pass a car....http://break.com/index/stupid_driver...ike_crash.html
    Well good luck

guys I'm def reading everything you're saying believe me. And I appreciate all of your concern and input about this, but if I get this bike, I will be extremely careful, even though many of you prob wont believe, I've never been a risk taker, speed junkie or whatever...o and you guys dont have to keep telling me about the insurance using my dads name because I posted this idea up before even going to him, and when I did he laughed and said yea right....

In that case, the 500 or 650 solution becomes even better:
1 - Not as likely for you to get behind the bike, and if you don't plan to USE the power and capabilities, why have it?
2 - Cheaper, if you don't plan to USE the power and capabilities, why pay for it?
3 - More reliable, high performance vehicles have high performance maintenance budgets and parts costs, if you don't plan to USE the power and capabilities, why pay for it?
4 - CHEAPER INSURANCE!!!!!, if you don't plan to USE the power and capabilities, why pay for it?

By the time you outgrow the 500/650 class bike, you WILL be ready for the 636 class... but you will also be older with more riding experience which will cut your insurance rate in half compared to the quote you're getting now.

If you put the insurance in his name and have you as a rider it will lower it a little. That is how I have mine and it saved me a couple hundred dollars a year.

Cool. We use State Farm for our other stuff. I'm hoping they'll be low for me heh (18 going on 19 in May -- I know it's gonna be high).

Holy crap! After buying the bike I won't even have cash money to pay half a year's worth, and I currently can't hold a job due to college. Hmm... that stinks!

I can get full coverage with a $1000 deductable for a new '06 636 for 1604/year thru Geico...I think thats pretty good considering I'm 21, perfect driving record and only been riding for a year

If you think you are going to be responsible then by all means get what you want...Nothing worse than regret as I have said. 3k is not enough on a bike that is for sure. About a month and a half + of riding days on this CBR and I have almost 2500 miles now...I ride it to work and for the past two Saturdays I have taken 250+ mile rides each time...Guess what, I am still learning this bikes quirks. For example it loves to slip into neutral, more body lean to lean, does not like minimal warm up, etc. However, as I said get what you want but learn to keep things in perspective and be responsible in the way you learn and ride.

I started on a 2003 636 and I loved and respected it and it loved me back. It is all up to you.

this is exactly why I gave up and ended up just telling them to get what ever the he!! they wanted because I knew they weren't going to listen anyway. we even have someone post as a testimonial why this guy shouldn't get this bike and he isn't going to listen.

why don't you do it right and get the ZX14 or busa and make sure you lessen your chance to post later.

Why the hell don’t ya'll get off his back? He wants a 636 and from what he has posted he is going to get one. He has had plenty of warnings and still thinks that he can handle the bike and he will be able to if he respects it. Just remember that it is not a 250 and it WILL get you into trouble real fast if you do something stupid.
