I had it done. I'm paranoid and didn't want to give them any reason to not honor any warranty issues. The dealer charged me just under $300. I'm not sure if the clearances were even off. When I did my 15k mile service recently, the clearances were out of spec. I've heard that this tends to be the issue that makes these tried and true motors not run forever.
If you decide to have it done, make sure you ask around. Out of the three places I called, only one of the shops said that they would check the valve clearances. The other two said that it wasn't necessary. Re: the price, I was wondering why motorcycle shops charged as much as car shops do. I found out why when I did my 15k mile service. Basically, so many things are jammed into such a small space, you have to disassemble a lot of the bike just to get to the valves. Good luck. |

thank you, you wouldn't believe how many people think it is "easy" to do and shouldn't cost that much. |

not easy to do.
Also, my dealer said to wait to 3000 for the first one, said at 600 the engine hasnt really run enough for things to find their natural positions. So as soon as i get my wrist back my bike goes in for its 3800mi service

Tweek, I wouldn't have believed your dealer....I just did the 600 mile valve job on my Ninjette. Every one of the valves was below minimum clearance....and yes, I did it myself. I wasn't about to pay the dealer $360 to do it. Max, if you have enough mechanical aptitude to change the spark plugs on a car, you can do a valve job on your bike. You'll probably have to buy a couple of tools and the service manual, but you can do it.

I need to check mine. I'm just a little paranoid to. I dont have the cash and I know I'm more than mechanically able but I just loathe pulling apart an engine that runs

NinjaDave, That's a great price, but you might want to check with Darrell if a dealership is likely to have checked the valve clearances while only logging 1.5 to 2 hours labor. Two out of three dealerships I checked with didn't feel that a valve clearance check at 600 miles was necessary. |
