    Default Motorcycle Insurance Costs

Cool! I just got quoted today by State Farm. I'm 18 [will be 19 in May], and for good coverage (equal to my car) it would be $418 for a 250cc and $860 for a 500cc PER YEAR! Also, they have an option where I can suspend the insurance at any time for the rest of the year (is this normal for all of you?), and they will either send me the difference or put it towards next year's payments.

That's surprisingly low! I'm happy! LOL now all I need is the course completion card and the permit and the bike.

WAHt?! When I went to state farm, they quoted my 1800 every 6 months! But I'm guessing you have a car insured with them already?

That is about what I paid to insure my 500r. It wasn’t too bad but it went up a little when I got the 636

State farm was pretty high for me. I ended up going with Progressive, which gave me a year on my 500r for 450$ (19yr male with no tickets/accidents).

For full coverage on my zzr600 its costing me 1400 for the year from Progressive. I'm 26 with a few tickets.

You can cancel your insurance at anytime and they are required to refund you the difference for the coverage you didn't use.

I should have added, when I get my 650R I'll be going with progressive. Liability is 25 a month, full comprehensive is 1800 a year.

Yeah. My family has 3 cars and a house insured with them.

Oh. That's cool, I wasn't sure how it was going to work out originally, but I see that's the normal thing.

I find it funny that you find my price so high, because I find it funny that your price is so low. My car insurance is higher than your motorcycle insurance even!

FOR A YEAR?! Are you sure you've got full coverage? If I went with the legal minimum, i would have paid 300 for a year.

I'm with Dairyland and for full coverage I pay $146 a year for a 440cc. I'm 32 and 2 tickets and no other vehicles. Also my bike is 26 years old.

I pay about $250 a year for my 1993 ZX7. Not too bad for a 21 year old with a crotch rocket. But I've never gotten in an accident nor have I ever gotten a ticket, that may have something to do with it. But I'm not saying I go slow

Guys, just be aware...suspending a policy is totally different than canceling a policy. You would suspend the policy instead of canceling if you were putting the bike in storage for the winter for example....that way all you have to do is call your agent in the spring and activate the policy when you're ready to get the bike out again. If you have full coverage on the vehicle, you would generally suspend collision, medical and uninsured/underinsured coverage while keeping your comprehensive in force. If you cancel your policy in the off season and your bike gets stolen or the garage caves in on it, you're not covered and thus, you're screwed.....

Thanks for clarifying that. Out here in Cali we ride all year so putting the bike in storage hadn't crossed my mind.

Yeah, well we do have to mess with it up here in the Great White North....I don't have to do anything on my bike because the insurance company figures storage time into the cost for motorcycles, but we do suspend coverage on my wife's Mustang during the winter. I would just hate to hear about somebody canceling when they really needed to just suspend coverage and then have something happen....
