Default carb problem

Hey guys i'm a total newbie so i need lots of help. I just got a 1986 600r it runs ok. But her is the problem it only runs for thirty and shuts off. It smell really rich and i think the needle valve it maybe stuck open. I've ran some carb cleaner and it got better it only used to run for a minute or two. How do i clean them really good? If i take off the carbs do i need any new seals or gaskets? Any help would be great

For a bike as old as that i would get a rebuild kit for each of your carbs as the gaskets will most likely crumble away when you pull em off.

Take em off and completely apart, clean em good (get rid of all the sludge), then when you put em back together do it with the rebuild kit.

Be sure not to mix the parts up as there may be slight variations from one carb to the next.

It's not to difficult but get a shop manual, and follow its procedure.

One other thing, don't get any carb cleaner on any plastic or rubber parts as it will eat em up.

Something i forgot:

Before you tear into your carbs check/replace your air filter, and put some new spark plugs in.

Just remember K.I.S.S.

When i first got into bikes i freaked out over some things that turned out to be very minor, always check the simple things first.

yep, had a perfect example on my lift yesterday.

guy brought it in for a no spark condition, said he changed the plug but still wouldn't run.

he brought it in muddy so it cost him 1/2hr for me to wash it then 1hr diagnostic time for me to find and fix the problem, the screws were out of the coil. they won't fire if they don't have a ground.
