Let the good times roll..

Hey all, I'm just wondering if anyone else does this or not.
I like to get on the road and ride sometimes, and I cannot count how many times I've either had to stop and ask for directions, or take a map with me and pull over each time to check and recheck the directions I was given. FINALLY, I bought a Garmin GPS. Fell in love with it. Bought the cheap C330, basic introductory GPS because I'm not looking for anything too fancy, just something that can point me in the right direction (literally, lol). Well this unit was originally intended for my car, I am wondering if it's uses can be expanded upon. Got home last night with it, and looked into the garage to see the bike. Of course I had to go and play with the suction cup mount. Tried mounting it on the inside of the windscreen, didn't work. To much of a concave effect going on in there. Then I set it down on the tank, thinking, and tried to pick it up and experienced resistance. **LIGHT BULB GETS REALLY BRIGHT OVER MY HEAD** Pulled up the little lever to mount it, stuck it to the tank, pushed the lever, and BOOM mounted. I tried to pull (with a little force at first) it off a few times, then tried to rip it off with quite a bit of force, and it seemed pretty well put. Sorry I draw stuff out, I like to explain everything in detail first Now to my actual question, has anyone ever done this before? Or should I nix the idea? Main things I'm worried about are bumps in the road, and wind. Would the windscreen block the unit from most of the wind coming directly at the bike from higher speeds? |

I like the idea man. If you tried to rip it off and it still stuck, you'll probably be fine, but i'd take Frank's idea of the lanyard and use that as a safety net in case it does break lose. One of these days i'll have to break down and get a gps thingy.

I believe that they do make a handlebar mount, for some of the smaller units like the Etrex Series, etc... The Problem with that is, they are alittle harder to see, and at night you would constantly need to have the backlight on.
Although, With a smaller unit generally you need something with mapping capabilities, and need additional software (ie. mapsource) to download more detailed maps other than the base map set. |

I've been thinking about a GPS unit for a while. My only problems with mounting it on the tank are A) I ride with a tank bag, and B) I'd rather have it mounted on the bars or dash, so it's more head's up. But my old ZX-10 has alot more dash than your bike.
