i got a problem with rust in my gas tank. i have a 1991 zx 11 and it is annoying to me. it gets in my carb bowls and makes my bike sputter and run like crap. i drain the bowls, the gas is orange with rust and clean the carbs like 3 times a month. when i do that it runs perfect. then a few days later rust builds up in the carbs and here we go again. i hate cleaning my carbs every other week to keep it running right to i need to get rid of the rust without replaceing the gas tank. i dont want to use acid because i dont want to eat a hole in the tank. my friends at the dealership said to put some kind of coating in the tank to cover the rust. he said it will put this coating that is sorta like the coating on the handles of pliers. this rubber mess. what are you guys opinion on it? should i do that or is there another way and if not how hard is it to put that coating in it?

take the tank off and empty the gas, put about 1 gallon of rocks in the tank with water, roll the tank gently with lite shaking. The rocks will clean the spots of rust off the tank. Keep inspecting the inside of the tanks and you will see it clean up. Wash the tank out really good, dry out your tank with a blower before re-installing it. Replace with new gas and happy riding. In the future drain the tank if you are going to let it sit for a long time like in the winter.

The stuff is called "sloshing compound", and you can get it at most automotive stores or I'm sure you can order it off the internet. It is a multipart goo that you mix, pour into the tank, then rotate the tank around every so often to make sure it gets to all the bad spots. It is kind of a pain to do, but the stuff I got worked very well. It puts a heavy coating of stuff on the inside surface of the tank that will probably outlast the tank itself. I did a tank over 10 years ago and it is still in great shape. The stuff I got was not cheap, around $50 as I remember, but I was restoring a '81 KZ 1000 and I couldn't get a tank for anywhere near that amount. Oh yes just one thing, once you slosh the tank you can't use several popular fuel additives (like B12) because they have acetone in them and will dissolve the coating.
Good luck.

There are two common brands of tank cleaning/lining materials: Kreem and Por-15. Of the two, Por-15 has a better reputation from what I've heard. The repair kits includes a de-rusting solution (phosphoric acid) and a liner. Depending on how much rust you have in the tank you can just go with the phosphoric acid wash if it's not too bad.
