Default How to change oil on a 250r???

I did a search on the forum and didnt find anything on this. I just picked up my bike this week (06 Ninja 250r) it has 4600 miles on it and it was broken in properly, 600 mile service, etc done to the bike. The previous owner took great care of the bike and excellent maintenance on it. I know how to change the oil on cars, trucks, etc but have never done one on a bike yet. I know it should be fairly easy. But I would like a more in detail which plug to look for to unbolt to drain the oil (so I don't unbolt the wrong one) and where the oil filter is, etc. I am not due for another oil change for 1400 miles, but I would like to get a head start on how to keep up on the bike, how to change the oil, etc. So any insight you can give me would be much appreciated. Thanks!

17mm socket and ratchet. you can't miss it.

it has a second 17mm in a big circle looking cap, that's where the filter is. inside the motor.

don't forget to check the o rings, you don't have to replace them every time but they do need to be changed after a couple times.

Thanks for the reply, now I know what I am looking for. What o rings are you refferring to though? Are there o rings beneath the filter that need to be replaced and that is what you are refferring to or are they somewhere else, like one that seals the plug and the cap where the filter is located at?

You'll see them. There's a big one around the metal circle that you undo the bolt that holds the filter. Then there's one or two on the filter's shaft. New filters will usually come with the small ones (maybe the big one too). Just check the big one and make sure its not squashed too bad.

When putting everything back. I like to put oil on the filter so its pre soaked so its not completely dry when starting the engine. Make sure to put some oil on the o-rings.

I also like to fill up the metal oil filter on my vehicle and VFR so oil reaches the engine faster.

I changed the oil in my wife's 250 and I used a how-to I found on the ninja250.com site. I suggest you go to that website and check it out. It was really easy and unlike my 650, I didn't even have to remove the fairing.

Make sure to not over fill the engine. Its bad for the piston rings and gaskets. Also it'll blow it into the air filter box.

Thanks for the tips and the link! I will make sure to have the oil centered in the sight. That was a very nice write up for the oil change and it was exactly what I was looking for, thanks again!

Oil change procedure is in the manual. You did get a manual didn't you? If not go back to where you got the bike and ask for it.

my owners manual says to take it back to the dealer to get the oil changed. most shop manuals cost around $60, they don't give you that.

I bought the bike used and the previous owner didnt turn in the manual when he traded the bike in for a bigger one. The dealer is going to try to get ahold of him to get it from him, if they can't get it back from him (lost, etc) then they are going to buy me a new one. I should get the original or a replacement when I go to pick up my plate when they come in from the state.
