If you want to respect your parents wishes then I respect that too. My gf was against me getting a bike big time. She thought it was an instant death ticket. I knew it was cheaper than having a car and I was getting into financial trouble so I almost had no choice. 6 months later, she has her own opinions about which bikes she likes, and helped me pick out my latest ride. If you get one anyway, it will take time but eventually they will see you are safe enough and aware of other drivers (heard that before too) to the point where a bike isnt instant death.

Umm.. I was 18 when i brought my bike home..

Didnt tell my parents or nothing.

Just showed up on a black 636..

Yes, there was lots of complaining and arguing, but they settled down, and now, a year and a half later.. i still have the bike.. 20 years old, and still riding.

Its up to YOU to prove to your parents that you can be trusted..

here is the reality, PEOPLE LOVE BIKES, but most of them are too scared to get out of their comfort zone, and actually ride them.. and thats why theyre scared for YOU to ride one..

My suggestion?.. pick up a ninja 250 or 500 (or a 650 if you have the money)
show your parents that its not a murder machine.. (aka, ride carefully)
and within a couple months, they wont care

I say respect your parents... let them win this one... in short time you will be on your own.. and this little battle (if you let them win) could pay off huge dividends in the future... (ask my son about his earring)

Hahha yeah thats about it for me too. Dad knew but mom didn't. She cried for 20 minutes when she walked out to see my shiny vulcan.

ROFLMAO..
At least it wasnt a crotch rocket.. (and the fact that i showed up with some girl on the back).

Dad didnt seem to mind it too bad, he used to ride bikes back in his day, but was too scared to try mine out..
My mom was hella upset though.

But heres the thing about it, parents get over it if you show them youre responsible enough.. (Disclaimer: Does NOT apply to ALL parents, yours may be special.. lol)

Wow. Here, of all places, no one suggested a KLR250. Or a SuperSherpa if you *need* electric start. *pppssshhh*

Wow.

Good bike, indestructable, street legal so you can practice, light and easy to ride in dirt. Great gas mileage, cheap to insure.
Get some good dirt experience under your belt, have a good time doing it. Then ride your bike to and from where you are going, build from there. Heck, get your dad riding off road a little bit, plant that seed, you'd be surprised how far that can go.

And, FYI, any thread you start with the "I want to ride but my 'rents won't let me." is going to generate another thread about that, and not the bikes....
