Default MSF course

so it's my 2nd day of the MSF course and it's kinda lame... but at the same time good for people that have no idea what a helmet is lol... the first day was like this is a helmet, these are gloves and this is a bike because it has 2 wheels... UGH! i guess u learn alot when u have a boyfriend that rides... my hunny taught me alot and goin into that class i was like an advanced rider lol. this one guy was like old as dirt doesn't need to be on a bike dropped the bike 3 times!! first of all he couldn't even just "walk the bike" he was goin in all directions! give me a break, even a child could walk the bike. anywho i took the writing test and passed with flying colors! only missed 2 stupid ones out of 50. pretty easy and common sense if u ask me. the hard part is doin the tight turns... i think they put the cones a little to close together because it was like almost impossible to turn without puttin ur foot down. butttttt wish me luck because that's what i'm gonna have to do tomorrow! AH!

I just finished the course last weekend. Don't worry about the tight turns in the box, or whatever, as long as you do the rest of the stuff OK, you'll pass!!!
Good luck!!!

Just don't do what I did....I ganked the throttle so the back spun out and fished the bike through the turn.

((My class they didn't have enough 250's, so I was on my friends GSXR1000 at the time))

Main thing is just to have fun! You may be experienced that the others in riding, but there's stuff that you may not have done yet (i.e. emergency braking, swerving, slow u-turns, etc.). Good luck!

lol.....some of us are older than dirt, an how could you have missed 2 "stupid" questions? It's good to be confident, but over confident will get you (fill in the blank)! I hope you pass, cause if you don't you're gonna feel pretty silly. Maybe the old man shouldn't be near a bike, but ya can't blame him for trying. The instructors won't pass anyone thats not ready.

I think all the threads with the MSF course topics should be made a STICKY somewhere on these forums!

funny... I guess your MSF experience depends upon your background and the instructor. In my case I'd never been on a motorcycle prior to MSF and the instructor was great. Plus we didnt have any dorks in our class.

It is funny look back now. I occasionally go out to the range and do the various drills just for grins. Today they are childs play and I tend to do them fairly fast. Then again it didnt strike me as that hard the first time around, just nerve racking b/c you don't want to be the dork who drops their bike during the test.

What would be cool would be to do the box drill with the rear tire spun up. Just drift the bike the whole time. Can't do it on those 250s, but I bet my 600 could.....too bad I cant.

Just remeber to look through the turn, or well ahead. That'll make those tight turns hella easy...

I was one of two in the class to get 100% on the written test and the ONLY one to do the box test without putting my foot down. However I royally choked on my final test because they made me go last (NERVES) and missed a shift twice.

One woman ran into a concrete embankment at WOT first gear. Suffice to say she didn't graduate.

Right turns are the best! That is where you see who can really turn. MSF is cool. Nothing great but nothing to scoff at as well. Worth it IMO.

I agree, I don't think I've heard of anyone who completed the course who DIDN'T pass.

I think the idea of the MSF is, anyone can do a balance test at the DMV and get a license, so lets try to give new riders a chance with some experience on rat bikes first. Why fail someone when they can just go to the DMV the next day and get their license for sitting on a bike?

Yeah I had some experience on a bike before I started but on dirt...No way was I going to get on a bike without making sure...I have been in many situations where the MSF stuff paid off. Other stuff you learn through some trial and error.

My wife took the course with me because if she was going to ride shotgun, she said she wanted to know the mechanics. We're a competitive couple of folks (in a good-natured way), and she finished first out of the class on the test. Less than 4 minutes, 100% on 50 questions. I finished right behind her about 10 seconds later, same thing. But memory tests have always been easy for both of us.

The second day of the MSF course was very good, in my opinion. The first day was a lot of getting comfortable with the bike, but day 2 focused a lot on safety and riding dynamics. Even if some concepts are familiar, you ought to learn how to do some new stuff confidently and it's a good refresher for skills you are already familiar with.

Consequently, my wife scored 1 point away from perfect on the driving test, with her only mistake being the "slightest amount of deceleration in the 135-degree turn." I finished right behind her, naturally. Five points away from perfect - only mistake being "moderate deceleration in 135-degree turn." The first time I took the turn in practice, I laid it over far enough that the peg on the Rebel 250 scrapped. Whoops! So I was a little gunshy at that point.

Now she wants her own bike. God bless the MSF course - it changed my wife from the prospect of being a nervous passenger to a confident driver. Can't say enough good things about it, for newbies or experienced folks alike.

I know several people who did not pass their first time, and one who has failed 3 times.

Is it nerves? Or are they just not the riding type?

Dunno... the one who has failed 3 times I know very well and she is an excellent passenger, so she should be a natural rider.
I don't know what she is having problems with in the class... I imagine she is sensitive about it and it is not discussed.
