Default Z1000 Low RPM Sputter?

My friend just bought an '03 Z1000 and when you blip the throttle from idle, it sputters and hesitates untill it gets past 2k rpm. Same thing happens if you are in a low gear going around a corner at low rpm and you try to give it throttle it just bucks and hesistates really bad untill you get past a certain rpm. Once it gets past that it goes like hell and runs perfect.

Anyone have an idea on what could be causing this? The bike has only 4,500 miles on it and it great condition otherwise. Thanks for the help!

Any mods to the bike...like an aftermarket exhaust? An '03 with only 4,500 miles? Great find!...but how long has it been sitting?

It was also only $5,100 cash out the door. Completely stock. It's most likely been sitting for a while...

Yea, I think that's what he's going to do. Too bad I've heard it's like a 2 hr job. Take off the thermostat or drop the motor lol.

i might go for injection checking and/or cdi.

most probably injection..
a good ultrasound cleaning of inyector will fix it.

i've yet to even attempt to do my own.
but i will agree that the bike may have been sitting for awhile and the problem will most likely be in the plugs or F.I.
if your friend has not started the mod process...keep him away from the guys on riderforums.
the bike will never look the same again.

I KNOW

CDI: Capacitor Discharge Ignition. You can become an "expert" like the rest of us!

Capacitor discharge ignition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The has so few miles that I would be suprised if it was the CDI, they tend to be pretty much bullet-proof. Clogged fuel injector maybe?

Ok, I'll let him know.

We put FI Cleaner through it...to no avail. Any other way to check and see if the injector is clogged?

Is there anyway to adjust the air/fuel ratio or intake? You can smell gas real bad when it's idling. Like it's running really rich...

First off you can get numbers 2 & 3 spark plugs out by loosening the stat housing and unplugging the associated connectors around it saves dropping the coolant, It's a jiggle but can be done.

I've found a surprising amount of low mileage Z1000's that have the Throttle bodies go out of Synchronization causing them to stumble at low revs.

I would check to make sure you have no air leaks which would cause a lean mixture that the ECU would compensate for by adding extra fuel.

Also check (Or get checked) the Throttle position sensor output voltage as this will cause your symptoms if it's out of range..

Poor Fuel can also cause problems, On occasion you can pick up some Water at the Pumps which is for the most part non combustable

Hey guys, we managed to get the spark plugs out by unbolting the tank, maneuvering it around accordingly, and using the little bend tool that came with the bike. It's runs 110% better now, it's all fixed! Thanks for the suggestions!
