Default Is this the baffle?

Because if it is, that sh!t's going back in! Remember, I know just about nothing about engines or anything related to them except for what I've read in Wikipedia. So when Ervins suggested that I definitely should take the baffle out, I thought that it would be some kind of core that's inserted the full length of the exhaust. Turns out I was only partially correct...

So why do I want the baffle back in? It's not because of the power decrease..."How do you know there's a power decrease?", you ask? I know because I cracked the throttle and took the bike from 3k to 10k this morning...in second gear. So either I'm getting used to the torque on the bike (unlikely in my opinion) or there was a power decrease. The bike seemed manageable from a power stand-point; so that's actually a slight bonus.

Is it because of the popping sound that the engine makes now? No, I can live with that...as long as the engine doesn't backfire.

The reason why I want to put them back in is because I can't stop the bleeding from my ears. I only have a 10 minute ride on the freeway plus 5 minutes before and after and let me tell you, my ears aren't ringing...they hurt! A friend from the mailroom who saw the box that the exhaust came in yesterday walked up to me this morning in the parking lot and asked if I installed the pipes. I told him that I did and that there's a slight problem...I turned on the engine and he said, "Bad @ss!". Then I whacked the throttle and you know how you go into an uncontrollable laughter when something is so extreme it shocks you and you can't do anything else? That's what he did...he couldn't even say anything.

Oh, and I set off a car alarm in the parking lot...two aisles away.

So I ask again, is this the baffle?

Pipe with what I think is the baffle...

Pipe without the "baffle"...

That is the baffle/ insert I told you to remove...I took mine off after it sounded muted. There is another insert that came with mine as well that looks like a washer with multiple holes. That will deaden the noise even more...Keep that baffle off. It really makes the bike more noticeable and sound so sweet...Where are the pics!

Yes, that is the baffle But where are the damn pics of the new pipes on the bike?!?!? Why didn't I know about this?

I rode my bike both with the baffle in and the baffle out. Honestly I didn't feel any difference in power (for that matter, I didn't even notice it from the stock pipe to the slip-on, it's only like 3 hp or something). The only appreciable difference is the noise reduction... that's why it's called a "baffle" or "DB Killer" In theory with the baffle in, the pipes should conform to DOT noise emissions... with the baffle out, they don't

Now my pipe is loud with the baffle out, but setting off a car alarm... DAAAAAAYAM!!!

Congrats on the pipes and I want to see pics!!!

The power decrease should not be that pronounced...But keep in mind that the pipe is still breaking in. You are also getting used to that bike. Keep it off for a couple a hundred miles and you will notice that it will break in and smooth out and also get a tad louder. I love the way mine sounds...Like I said the sound clip do it no justice...I was wailing on it on 2nd and 3rd gear today on the highway and it sounded freaking extraordinary!

Funny story...My co-worker finally heard my pipe yesterday and when I turned it on he had the same laughter...Like Holy crap that thing is insane! He liked the sound as well.

Thank you for recognizing my attempt at humor. I do find this whole situation funny because of the ridiculousness of the volume level. I bet you I could win in a sound competition against a Harley--seriously.

It was the car alarm part that honestly made me laugh! I wasn't sure if you were really joking, that's why I added the no offense

No washers on this model. And seriously, I damaged my hearing enough back in my early 20's playing in a band (I was the drummer so you can imagine what it's like playing those and then being between the bass and guitar amps). I can't hear clearly in rooms with a lot of background noise--I don't want to lose any more hearing...I want to hear my daughter laugh and cry when she arrives in April. And I'm only half joking when I say that...this exhaust is just loud. I actually made a couple of cagers swerve away from me this morning when I blipped the throttle--those dumb-@sses should've been paying attention in the first place.

Breaking in!? Does that mean that the bike will sound even more obnoxious!? Right now as it is, I can't help but imagine that the bike sounds like one of those annoying "fart cans" that those punks put on their 4-banger, rice burners.

What is that popping sound the result of exactly?

Car alarm: No, that was no joke. Judging from the volume of the alarm, we figured that the car was at least two aisles away. That would put the distance somewhere from 150 to 200 feet away.

Stefano: Ervins had a good point, I'm still learning the Z1 so maybe I might be over thinking things but I know this for a fact: I've never taken the bike from 3k to 10k on-the-tach when cracking the throttle more than half way. The speed was there but it really did feel like there was a less torque. Before I could feel the front end getting light when I did that. I know that Ervins is going to do everything he can to keep me from putting the baffles back in but seriously, it's the sound level that's gonna make me put them back--the power is still tremendous.

The can seems to sound beautiful though...Yeah it is loud but that has its perks. Also, it is a good way to get the attention of others...Not sure..Backflow? I like that sound though. It is all good...You pipe seems to sound like mine which if it does is a good thing.

With the insert in, it might sound stock...Then all you have are pretty cans...But yeah the mid range when cruising is where it is at...Cruising, just WOT it and you will see a nice noticeable pull. I made sure to notice the little stuff so moving forward I can say there was a difference or not...There was. Stefano rides a small bike that is why there is no power.

This is funny! Making cagers swerve is a big plus, bleeding from the ears isn't!

BTW with or without the insert...It is a powerful bike...Try with the insert...If it sounds stock, I would take them off.

I just read a thread in a Z1000 forum and a guy in the UK is selling my exact pipes because he said that he wanted something bigger and that "...they are loud even with baffles in...".

I'm gonna try it with the baffles in to see how loud it is. My ears are still ringing and it's 4 and-a-half hours later.
